I bought a feather and black mattress and bed 3 years ago and although the frame Ian perfect the mattress is shockingly uncomfortable after 3 years.
I expected it to last longer.
It was wonderfully comfortable to begin with.

Can anyone recommend me somewhere to buy a new one?

Budget for the mattress is around £800

IKEA Hovag. I'm 18 stone, and I've not broken it in 4 years.

They look good but think itl be too firm.

I think I need soft to medium.

Would a mattress topper help my mattress feel softer?

Try the Eve/Leeds/Simba ones
They all come with a 100 night trial and they come and pick it up if you don’t like it

We’ve got a 2 year old Leesa mattress and it’s great

Honestly I got a 12inch mattress off amazon £145 it'd got memory foam and supported with springs. Its so firm - its great. Also picked up a temp bed frame for about £70 off amazon too

Look at John Ryan By Design
johnryanbydesign.co.uk

They do 60 night trial/return on their mattresses and they are excellent quality.

There is lots of information on the website about buying a mattress, so if you don't buy from them, you can still use the information to help you.

I wouldn't get bought into the 'Bed in a Box' trend, a lot of the money you're paying for goes into marketing, and I'm unconvinced buying a mattress with springs that can compress in a box is a good thing!

I've never had a bad night's sleep in a Premier Inn so I'd be tempted to go one of their Hypnos beds!

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 20/03/2019 16:09

what do these companies do with mattresses that are returned after 99 days testing? An I right to be concerned that you could end up with a mattress someone else has slept (and the rest) on for over 3 months??

OpportunityKnocks · 20/03/2019 16:18

Those Premier Inn mattresses are awesome.

I have a lovely ikea one. Pocket sprung.
Pop a mattress topper in top olto soften it if you like

OpportunityKnocks · 20/03/2019 16:20

@weeping

My mum has one of those mattresses, she got from a charity shop, she thinks they are the returned ones and are donated

I've got a Relyon, a superking I bought in House of Fraser sale about 15 years ago, its superb I love it.

bebeboeuf · 20/03/2019 16:22

I’m not a fan of the bed in a box as they are all full of latex and memory foam. Not my bag

Love my Simba

Lottieskeeper · 20/03/2019 16:28

I second IKEA Hovag. They do a firm or a medium but to me the firm is more medium and the medium feels very soft.
We've only had ours a week and it's so unbelievably comfy for such a cheap mattress. I keep waking up confused because our old mattress was so uncomfortable and this is like sleeping on a cloud

StarJumpsandaHalf · 20/03/2019 22:15

We're all different and never more so than in beds and pillows that suit, but I've always found a divan bed much more comfortable than a slatted base even when the mattress on top has been the same.

In the past have been happy with Relyon and Hypnos beds but currently have a Vispring, which is amazing but was only affordable in a big sale. We've had it a number of years and it looks and feels brand new.

Absolutepowercorrupts · 20/03/2019 22:20

I've recently bought a Simba mattress, it's fantastic. I've had lower back problems for about 50 years-yes I am that old! This is the only mattress I've had that supports me properly, I'm a bit overweight not excessively, and I can go to bed with a bit of an ache in my lower back and in the morning it's gone. Well worth the money.
