Possible Broken toe

career245 · 19/03/2019 20:20

I was a idiot yesterday, I walked into some books, and caught my little toe (had no socks on) it's now throbbing constantly- and is in the process of swelling up, is it a good idea to see GP or not?

They probably won't do anything unless the bone is sticking through the skin...ice it and split it to the toe next to it

I broke my middle toe on Boxing Day. NHS said not to see a doctor unless it’s broken the skin or feels cold. Mine still hurt sometimes for longer than they say, plus it’s still a bit red and has a lump but doesn’t really bother me much any more.

I had a similar accident and was at the doctor soon after for an unrelated issue so I asked about the toe and they said nothing they could do. They advised it only needs medical treatment if it’s pointing in the wrong direction, skin is badly broken or it goes numb and cold. They advised I could help manage the pain by strapping it to the toe next to it, wearing comfortable shoes that don’t press on it and taking pain relief medication.

What was wrong with all the advice you received on the other thread you started about this?!

career245 · 19/03/2019 22:00

@troppibambini I put this thread up before the other one, as this one was meant to go into general health but pressed wrong button, and realised too late, I thought I would keep it up!

I've broken at least two toes. They won't even x-ray it if you go to A&E. Just get some narrow Micropore tape and tape it to the toe next to it, so it's supported. It'll feel better in a week or so. Paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain while it hurts, and you'll need comfy shoes for a while.

My apologies career x
