What do you do first?

I'd take myself and DH off to ski for a week in Val d'Isère. Lots of après ski massages and hot tub time in our private chalet whilst we sip prosecco and plan the unexpected early retirement Grin

Go to an estate agent and start looking for that perfect house - or a plot of land to build it on. Failing that, a house that could be improved or knocked down and my dream home built to replace it.

I'm very much a home-bird and have little interest in fancy holidays, designer handbags or other status symbols.

Sadly, I'm still waiting to hear those magic words.

ncagain222 · 22/03/2019 09:22

Loving this thread!

A million is not enough for me and DH to give up our very stressful jobs, but it would be wonderful to have that extra cash in the bank for security and treats.

I would pay off my mortgage and do a loft conversion - £350k. I’d also pay for the house to be professionally decorated with lovely fixtures and fittings, and also sort out the garden - probably another £40k.

Book a dream holiday to a beautiful hotel somewhere hot - around £20k.

I’d give £100k to my parents and another £100k to my brother. Then I’d stick the rest in savings but spend it on regular holidays and treats.

Anyone else buying a lottery ticket tonight?

Lessstressedhemum · 22/03/2019 09:31

Oh, and buy some new clothes.
Anything left over would just go into the bank for when the washing machine blew up or whatever.

Lessstressedhemum · 22/03/2019 09:35

Oops, my post seems to have lost itself somewhere.
It was just the usual - money for kids, charitable donations, small amount of debt and dealing with the mould issue upstairs that the council seem incapable of addressing.

BlooperReel · 22/03/2019 10:07

Pay off the mortgage, put £60K aside for the kids for university funds, and another 50K each towards a deposit for when they are old enough.

Sort out a deposit and couple of months' rent for my mum to move out of her crappy rental.

Another £100K in the pension/savings pot, then plan holidays to all the places I've always wanted to go Grin

Disfordarkchocolate · 22/03/2019 10:11

Pay of our credit card.
Set aside 50K for each child.
Resign.
See if my husband can move to 0.8WTE.
Pay off the mortgage if the penalty didn't outweigh the interest, otherwise set aside the money until it was worth it.
Book a holiday.
Buy a day van.
Start looking for a low-stress pt job after the summer holidays.

BadgersBum · 22/03/2019 11:50

Pay off my mortgage, get everything done on the house that it needs to get it to a saleable state. Then buy the house down the road that I've had my eye on (nothing flash, just ticks all my day-to-day boxes). Get rid of our clapped out bangers and buy a couple of nearly new cars and maybe a campervan. That should leave about 700K to stick in the bank as a nice pension nest egg/redundancy safety net. I think DH would like to be able to walk out of his job, but I only work a few hours a week and quite enjoy mine. Maybe we'd pay for a few training courses so that he could change career.

What monkeyface said on the first page

JammyGem · 22/03/2019 12:29

Buy a house, get driving lessons, and quit my job so I could be a SAHM. I'm dreading leaving DD when maternity leave ends!

motherofdxughters · 22/03/2019 12:36

I go straight over to the new development about a mile away and drop £430,000 cash on a four bedroom detached home with a double garage that I've been lusting after.

I give DH money to buy a family car that fits us all and the pick up truck that he's always wanted as a second car and to pay the insurance on both. We have room for a second car now. He'd be delighted.

I book a family holiday for two weeks, all inclusive with first class flights for the leg room to Florida to do Disney, Universal and the space station plus some relaxation time in the sun.

I buy the £800 forest green velvet sofa I've been pining after for our new home.

I relax knowing I have £400,000+ in savings to live on and accrue interest on for a while and that we have a house that we can't be kicked out of.

Sn0tnose · 22/03/2019 13:59

Go into work, pack up my mug and personal bits before sticking a big 'Gone Fishing' sign on my computer and cartwheeling out the door, never to be seen again.

We'd spend 500k on property. Where we want to live is not a particularly wealthy area and we could buy three properties for that money. We'd take the middle house, put my mum one side and rent out the third. 100k on a nice car, holidays and a few other treats and keep 400k in the bank to supplement the rental income and us both having low paid but low stress jobs that don't slowly crush our souls.

colbyandmontysmum · 22/03/2019 14:45

We just moved from a city where 1million wouldn't be enough for a down payment on a house. We now live across the country in a very pretty area and were able to buy a house and retire. 1 million would let me pay off my 2 DC's mortgages, fix up our house, pay off bills, help my elderly DM, treat my DB and DSIL and ourselves to a river cruise, buy plane tickets for our friends to come visit and buy as much stuff off Amazon as I want!! Grin

Babysharkdoodoodoodo · 22/03/2019 15:00

Run away

MirandaWest · 22/03/2019 15:07

Pay off mortgage.
Get nicer car than one I currently have
Make bathroom nicer
Go on a nice holiday
Hopefully have some money left

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/03/2019 16:48

Invest it to give me a modest income, 20k per year would supplement maintenance, carers allowance and DLA and mean I am not living on savings and handouts from mum.

ShowMeTheKittens · 22/03/2019 17:52

Buy a place and ensure my Mum is better looked after than currently. It might be a big home so I can help others too. I'd like that.

OohMrDarcy · 22/03/2019 18:07

Buy my house, so I'm not at the mercy or rental costs
Buy a dog, because I've always wanted one and don't feel secure to do it renting.
Put 25k x2 away for DC for uni
Put 50k x2 away for DC house deposits
Small treats for sisters family / parents
Pay off debts
Rest goes into extending / upgrading home a bit / savings for a buffer.

Wouldn't stop or cut down work, but would free up a massive portion of my income so I could save / have more fun.

BIWI · 22/03/2019 18:10

No mortgage any more.

But I'd use it to make sure we have an enjoyable retirement.

And some to both DC to help them on to the property ladder.

MirandaWest · 22/03/2019 18:15

I wouldn’t stop working as I earn more than our mortgage payment per month but I would maybe drop a day
