What do you do first?

I'd take myself and DH off to ski for a week in Val d'Isère. Lots of après ski massages and hot tub time in our private chalet whilst we sip prosecco and plan the unexpected early retirement Grin

Travel
New car nothing fancy
Buy a nice house decent but not a massive pile
Invest the rest

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 19/03/2019 22:27

buy a house, take a driving test, hello New York 😊 and take kids to Florida 😊

pisspawpatrol · 19/03/2019 22:31

Move house so I can fit a dishwasher in the kitchen!

PatchworkElmer · 19/03/2019 22:35

Clear mortgage, extend house, sort the patio out, replace the garage doors.

I would want to help my brother, but would need to think about how best to do it.

SpeedyBojangles · 19/03/2019 22:36

Buy a bigger house

HawkeyeInConfusion · 19/03/2019 22:39

Pay off mortgage
Get garden landscaped and pay for regular gardener to keep it nice
Get newer, slightly bigger, car
Reduce work hours so I can pick up DC from school instead of relying on afterschool care
Holiday to Disney World
Invest remainder

I'm rather boring and practical.

cittigirl · 19/03/2019 22:42

Buy a modest house and a new car. Invest some for Dds future and mine then blow a bit on world travel.

Bloodybridget · 19/03/2019 22:45

Get the front of the house smartened up with new paving, replace the front wall, get a new front door. Get the basement remodeled and the back garden landscaped - and of course we would not be living here while all the work was happening. Big cash gifts to close family, some lovely holidays, and investments. Oh and I'd like a good CD player, and a new laptop.

Applesbananaspears · 19/03/2019 23:18

I’m in a situation where I will inherit this kind of money, no stealth boast as my partner is terminally ill and it will be a payout from his work. Having taken financial advice all the money will do apart from clear our mortgage will be to be invested in a variety of pots to give me and my children some income and some growth in line with inflation. I have a decent salary and it will supplement that but sensibly speaking, if we want to see the money last into old age it’s really not going to be enough to gift family members and pay off other people’s mortgages. Sorry for the downer.

Now if we were taking £5m it might be a whole other story

MintyCedric · 19/03/2019 23:19

Pay off mortgage 88k

Home improvements 30k approx

£100k to parents

£100k in trust for DD

Hand in my notice, go to uni (28k fees plus 3 x 25k pa living expenses)

Would leave me with 77k 'fun money' for travel and indulgences and £500k invested for my retirement.

FurrySlipperBoots · 19/03/2019 23:27

Hmmm. A million doesn't go too far these days...(she says, as though she had more than £1.73 in the world, which she doesn't)...but I guess I would:

Pay off my parent's mortgage (which would piss them off because they would prefer to put any spare cash into another property, but I don't care because I'd like the satisfaction of knowing they finally own the house). Not sure how much that would be, maybe £300,000, which is already quite a big chunk out!

Probably give my brother and sister £50,000 each

Remaining £600,000 I would spend on buying my own home, and decorating/furnishing to my taste.

Gosh that was boring! I reckon I'd squeeze a new car and a holiday out of it too, maybe spend about £15,000 on them. I would want to contribute to charity too. Saving orangutans mostly.

woodcutbirds · 19/03/2019 23:36

I'd have a sabbatical from work for a year.
I'd go to a bootcamp to lose the weight I'm always too stressed/comfort eating to get rid of. I'd book a personal trainer on return to keep the weight off.
Next I'd renovate the house and garden - the whole place needs redoing - it's falling apart.
Then I'd learn some skills i've put off for too long, especially piano and advanced driving lessons.
I'd give money to DSis and DBro and a cousin who really needs it. And make several donations to charities I support or which friends are actively involved in keeping going.
Take DH and DC on a few weekend breaks to cities and book some gorgeous longer haul holidays to places I've always wanted to visit.

It would be bliss.

Reaa · 19/03/2019 23:41

First thing would be to finally,
buy my closest friend, their very own disability adapted bungalow and a top of the range mobility scooter, so they could actually move around safely --instead of
the horrible health hazard and highly unsuitable housing association property they in now-- and with the scooter they could get out and about and start to enjoy life again.

second Hopefully have enough left to put a nice sized deposit down for a mortage on our own home.

third if I could save a few hundred back, I would spend on a decent pair of jeans that actually fitted me properly and treat myself to a few hours at a hairdressers.

Rockbird · 20/03/2019 00:12

Book dd2's birthday party that she's been begging for. Her birthday was in January... Sad

gluteustothemaximus · 20/03/2019 00:23

Pay off mortgage.

Take the kids for an immediate holiday to euro Disney and actually spend time with them (always bloody working and stressing about money).

Put money aside and think about what to do next.

Tell no one.

Put a shit tonne of food in the local food bank.

OnlineAlienator · 20/03/2019 00:24

Buy house. Repair car. Keep change as savings.

gluteustothemaximus · 20/03/2019 00:26

Buy some clothes actually. Mine have holes in.

Get haircut. Haven't had one for about 11 years.

Get the kids swImming lessons and sign up for other fun clubs to do.

New carpet for lounge. It’s minging.

Moneymanifestor · 20/03/2019 06:35

I don't think I would tell anyone either tbh!

Immediate family yes so I could pay off mortgages and debts.

IAmNotAWitch · 20/03/2019 06:38

Pay off mortgage, renovate, go on holiday and buy an investment property.

Would not tell anyone other than DH, including my kids. My lifestyle is excellent so I would keep it as is.

Grundtal · 20/03/2019 10:49

Pay off debts
Buy a new car
Savings for the kids
Gifts to family
Massive holiday

That's probably about half so I'd use the rest to fund a move to a slightly bigger home.

DarlingNikita · 20/03/2019 10:52

Immediate holiday round Iran with the best guides, staying in amazing places.

Don't care much about anything after that. Maybe buy a house to rent out.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 20/03/2019 11:00

Pay off mortgage, new kitchen, new bathroom. A few nice holidays.

We're late 30s so it's not enough to never need to work again. And we couldn't go off round the world because the dc have school (and the 11 year old with asd would hate it.)

Palominoo · 20/03/2019 11:02

I would purchase several Shetland ponies, possibly even start a Shetland pony rescue.

I would also donate a large amount to Greyhound rescue and Ty Nant cat charity who suffered an appalling attack involving the theft and killing of their lovely cats not so long ago.

Palominoo · 20/03/2019 11:02

Forgot the picture.

Congratulations!! You just won a million ...
finalyfine · 20/03/2019 19:08

Buy a reasonable cheap property, invest in graduate entery medicen for dh.

If there is any left overs, go to hajj which is at the moment more than £4 000 per person, if booked as a group. No children just me & dh and anyone else who can pay for themselves.
