Money stolen from son’s wallet.

So my 11 year old son just discovered that £300 has been stolen from his wallet in bedroom. All his hard earned money, Christmas money, birthday money. There was only £20 left? It’s driving me crazy. I know a friend has been in his room and my younger 8 year olds friend. Their doesn’t seem to be any other explanation? I have said I will give him the money back as he is so upset but it’s driving me crazy! Didn’t sleep last night and don’t want to think badly or think their friends took it! What would you do? 😢

Yes that is quite a diplomatic way of putting it 😬 just scared of asking

I'd have the suspect children round and then arrange for a male friend to come round as a detective and say they need to take fingerprints as the wallet as your sons fingerprints on it and one other set which must belong to the person who took the money.

Get the friend to say this is your chance to say if you took the money as a joke/prank and give it back and we will say no more about it. Call their bluff and see if one cracks.

Decormad38 · 19/03/2019 17:49

Why doesn’t your son just ask the boys and say my mums going to come and speak to parents. It might be enough to get them to confess.

dreichuplands · 19/03/2019 17:49

I agree you can contact parents saying that you are trying every last resort and just in case there has been a game following on from some banter. It is a large sum of money so they are going to understand that you want it found so as long as you aren't accusing anyone of anything.
As a parent I would understand your wanting if found but be quite hurt you thought my dc could take it.

Whatever you do, don’t do this! It will unleash a shit storm.

Sexist too!

You can but ask. Don’t assume anything. Be open. It might not flush out the kid. Be clear you are asking a few children and appreciate that’s lots of people not involved.

FlopsyMopsyRabbit · 19/03/2019 18:02

If you won't talk to their parents then I don't know what to suggest. That's the only way to find out.

mumof2littleguys · 19/03/2019 18:08

OKhitmewithit That’s very weird! I had this idea too and also to set up a camera in room and arrange a huge play date. Both extremely wrong!

Can’t shake the sad feeling for my son 😭

Start with the kid who made the rich comment. Stress to the parents that you don’t think he did it but are checking with the parents of all kids who visited just in case. It sucks, but you have to do it. Sad

BlackCatSleeping · 19/03/2019 18:11

Also, think how you’d feel if you got a text like that from another parent. Would you be angry or happy to help?

Pinkyyy · 19/03/2019 18:12

Okay so the rich comment has made me wonder.

Do you think he's taken the money to school and shown it off, and then had it stolen at school but not dared to tell you that's what really happened? I can't understand why his friend would make that without being given reason- unless he's particularly worse off or you have a particularly big/nice house?

mumof2littleguys · 19/03/2019 18:13

BlackCatSleeping

I think I’d be angry? 😢

So do you think your DH would have taken the money?

BlackCatSleeping · 19/03/2019 18:16

Angry that the mum asked?

Look, they are just kids. They do stupid stuff sometimes. They don’t always engage their brains. It doesn’t mean he’s an evil person or anything.

You need to ask though. The parents might be worried sick about where the money came from.

mumof2littleguys · 19/03/2019 18:17

He doesn’t take things into school. Is very careful with everything he owns and doesn’t like to show off. We really don’t live in a flash house. He often feels shy at play dates when he sees their houses. He just looks after everything he has and is very appreciative of everything. He never asks for anything and says mummy I don’t need this or that whenever I buy him something he needs😥

Sorry, I didn’t say that. That came across wrong. The child was upstairs

Maybe I have watched too much Jeremy Kyle but there are so many people it could be relatives , your friends family.

mumof2littleguys · 19/03/2019 18:20

BlackCatSleeping

Yes but without knowing what’s happened for certain I feel I cannot ask

That is not applicable unfortunately. I know who has been around to our house. Very frustrating not knowing

Hollowvictory · 19/03/2019 18:23

Oh dear get him a bank account! My 11 year old has debit card, online bank, mob banking. No need to keep that cash in the house

HollowTalk · 19/03/2019 18:27

Why did the friend say he was rich? Was he aware that your son had all that money? Is there a big difference in wealth between the two boys?

mumof2littleguys · 19/03/2019 18:28

Hollowvictory

Really?

Oh dear I feel I am not advanced yet with his money and banking 😮

HollowTalk · 19/03/2019 18:29

Sorry, I can see that you've answered the 'rich' bit, but did he know exactly how much there was there? I know at that age I probably would have liked to see that much money, given I never had any at all. I wouldn't have taken it, but I have to say I would have wanted to see it.

mumof2littleguys · 19/03/2019 18:30

HollowTalk

That’s the weird thing? His friend is much better off than us- holidays , house etc. I don’t understand the comment at all?

OP posts:
mumof2littleguys · 19/03/2019 18:32

HollowTalk

He knew exactly how much was there and thought it was safe in his wallet in his room 😢
