What maths do you use in your job?

A few years ago, a teacher started a brilliant thread on MN, asking posters whether they used maths in their job, and if so what job they did. The thread had hundreds of responses and it was great to see the diversity of the replies - I've used those responses in my classroom to show pupils how maths is used in jobs that they might not have thought of. Replies included a pilot, QC, nail technician, mediator, charity worker, SAHM, computer network programmer, chef, dancer, sports performance coach and many many more.

I'm a Maths teacher, so I use all sorts of maths in my job every day Grin. I'm hoping for more interesting replies from this thread, so that I can update the display in my classroom!

Thanks in advance!

I’m an investment banker, so use maths all day long. I sell structures that help companies manage their exposure to interest rate risk, so spend a lot of time calculating how clients debt service costs would rise if interest rates rise.

I also look at the impact economic data like inflation might have on interest rates as well as looking at bond pricing and yields.

I failed my maths a level!

(See!

I TOLD you I wouldn't need it!

In your face, Mrs Bryce.)

I work in a medication team in the NHS. Adding strengths of tablets to reach the final does and the amount of tablets needed for a month

Simple maths but important to be done correctly

Small business owner

I do everything from calculating change to devising complicated spreadsheets that show margins, cashflow forecasts etc. As it's a food business, I also use maths when developing recipes and making the products.

Percentages mostly for statistics, I use a percentage calculator online for speed, it's amazing. I can do percentages myself but this literally does it in less than a second!

I do advanced statistics to predict behavioural outcomes and have recently started to dabble in AI algorithms to mine text. I'm an academic. I have lost all ability to do simple arithmetic without a spreadsheet though!

I work in executive recruitment and use maths to create attractive compensation packages for senior executives and to work out how much they are actually on eg base salary + bonus + vested shares + benefits/cash payout etc
