Amazing Edinburgh Hotel

Looking for ideas for DH and I to spend a couple of days away for 50th birthday. Just wondered what hotels are good at the moment.

I see the George is now the Principal and the Principal is now the Kimpton. I have stayed at neither.

I have stayed at the Balmoral, the Howard and the Scotsman. Loved them all but would like to try somewhere new.

Also where is good for dinner. Is Tom Kitchin in Leith still good.

Stobo Castle hotel?

Always love the Witchery, but buggered up reservation there recently so ate at Rhubarb instead. A bit underwhelming.

Dinner at Wedgwood was fabulous on another night though.

Balbirnie house in Fife.

Peat Inn in Fife - great to stay, wonderful food.
The Cellar in Anstruther is another Michelin star place and is wonderfully understated.
Newport Restaurant and rooms in Newport on Tay - run by Jamie Scott, winner of MasterChef Professionals.
Tom Kitchin has a new place in Gullane, East Lothian, restaurant with rooms called the Bonnie Badger. I ate there but was a bit underwhelmed by the food and thought it was very pricy.

The food and rooms at the Peat Inn are excellent, but it isn’t a hotel as such and you would have to drive to get anywhere in the day. The breakfast is a bit so so, you have to order the night before and it’s served in your room.

St Andrews Bay is nice but definitely resorty.

We stayed at Monachle Mohr when it was on its way up and had lots of problems, no hot water for one. The owner treated us like something she’d scraped off her shoe but I believe her son, who was very nice, runs it now. It’s a bit far from places of interest, perhaps.

The Peat Inn is fabulous!!

We stayed at the Norton House hotel in Ingliston about a year ago. Large country manor type property, very dark in a cosy welcoming way and the food was good too.

The Lake of Monteith Hotel is lovely and so is Cromlix - both about 30mins from Stirling

venusandmars · 19/03/2019 22:39

Oh yes, Lake of Menteith Hotel....

Thank you all again. I can see I will have to plan a few weekends away in order to visit some of these fabulous places.
