Any medical people around? Non-urgent medical advice please re. cyst / abscess.

Please don't flame me for asking for advice but I don't know anyone in real life with a medical background and my previous experience of phoning 111 hasn't been great so I thought I'd ask a forum full of strangers Wink.

For background I had a sebaceous cyst on my shoulder / top of my back. Was advised by the GP to make another appointment with the GP who conducts minor surgery procedures to be assessed for possible removal. That appointment was booked weeks ago and is on Friday. In the meantime, I accidentally knocked the cyst and it became infected. I went back to the GP as it was swollen and sore and was prescribed antibiotics. I finished those on Saturday.

It finally started to burst on Friday and has been oozing since then. It's reduced greatly in size and is still sore but not as painful as it was. Anyway, this morning I noticed several small holes had appeared. I put a dressing on it to stop my top becoming covered and this evening when I removed the dressing a few of the holes have merged. They range in size, the largest is about 4-5mm wide and deep. Now that I've removed the dressing the holes are oozing again.

Question 1 - should I put another dressing on it overnight, or leave it uncovered?
Question 2 - If I need to dress it, what type of dressing should I use? The dressing today stuck to it and took me 20 minutes of soaking in warm water before I could get it off!!
Question 3 - Is this just a normal part of the healing process or should I head back to the GP tomorrow to get it looked at?

Apologies for the long post (& sharing too much information) but any advice would be great. Thanks Smile

Yes I'd put another dressing on it if it's oozing, anything big enough to cover it should be fine and then make an appointment with your practice nurse tomorrow who can assess it and dress it further.

Definitely put a dressing on it. I had a really bad infected cyst/abscess last year which burst and I had to have the cyst surgically removed and weeks of daily repacking. The nurse/ dr will probably not want to just leave it

Thank you. I covered it last night and saw the nurse earlier today.
