living without the dishwasher

Ive got a dishwasher, had it years. Ive got used to having it....

How common is it to NOT have one? 1 or 2 houses Im looking at dont have dishwasher space and Im thinking about how Id manage without one again. I think I would be fine. First world problem I know!

We've just moved and at our old house it was built in. The one in the new house didn't work so I was almost 2 weeks without one.

I didn't like it at all. We ate out a lot or got takeaway pizza.

I hate washing up but my DH did the cups and glasses etc.

pinkboa · 18/03/2019 23:40

I couldn't.

We've refused to view rentals without one.

I have two children... I'm always in the kitchen.

My life since acquiring a dishwasher with DC1 4yrs ago has been awesome! I love the fact that after dinner I have 2/3 pots to wash and 2/3 utensils.

I wouldn't give up my dishwasher.

Mine broke a few years ago and I didn't replace it. I use it for storing tupperware and bottles of squash. There is only the 2 of us and it takes less than 10 minutes to wash, dry and put away the dishes and being on a water meter a lot less water.

Mine broke and I couldn't afford to replace it straight away. Horrible, horrible month of messy kitchen.

Gibble1 · 18/03/2019 23:53

Each time mine has broken I have replaced it. Longest we have been without is 2 years and it was awful.
I am now the shortest person in the family but at 5’9”, washing up at the sink kills my back. I’m on my feet all day at work and have to work at too low a height so I would have even worse back problems than I already do if I didn’t have a dishwasher.
Plus it keeps the kitchen tidy and no fishing around in the sink for disgusting grot at the end of washing up.
And I hate drying up even more than I hate washing up!

Justmuddlingalong · 19/03/2019 00:34

We don't have one. I like the excuse to escape to the kitchen for 10 minutes when life/family/visitors are getting on my wick.

SurgeHopper · 19/03/2019 01:03

Dishwasher and tumble dryer. Lifesavers.

happymummy12345 · 19/03/2019 02:03

We have never had one. I'd love one though

c75kp0r · 19/03/2019 02:21

Never had one. You don't miss what you never had.

OnlineAlienator · 19/03/2019 02:30

Never had one. Looks like a time consuming pain in the arse to me.

Sparklingbrook · 19/03/2019 04:46

It's one of my must haves in self catering rentals. Grin
Not going to spend my holidays washing up.

schnubbins · 19/03/2019 07:35

I could not imagine living without a dishwasher .It is essential for harmony in the family imo .Ours in on at least 2 -3 times a day and put everything in except my Le Creuset pots. I did realise that so many people don't have one or even want one.It comes after a washing machine as an essential appliance for me.

Chloek1994 · 19/03/2019 07:36

I dont have one my kitchen is teeny !

ooooohbetty · 19/03/2019 07:40

Used to have one. Don't now. Don't miss it.

ooooohbetty · 19/03/2019 07:41

And not only do I not have a dishwasher, I don't have a tumble drier either. Don't miss that either.

implantsandaDyson · 19/03/2019 07:47

I've never had one. There's 5 of us. I don't mind doing dishes, neither do the kids. Although we don't have mounds of dishes sitting around anywhere. A few cereal bowls and plates washed in the morning- 2 mins, no dishes during the day, mugs and glasses rinsed if used in the afternoon, then a few pans (at most) and five plates, cutlery etc most evenings - again 10 mins. My parents who love their dishwasher like a child seems to spend more time than that getting their glasses in the right way!

Lweji · 19/03/2019 07:52

I dare you to time your washing time and report back.
Unless you just rinse not wash.

BarbaraofSevillle · 19/03/2019 08:18

There's probably a huge overlap between the people who don't see the value and time saving aspect of a dishwasher and those who don't cook very much. They use less water and get things cleaner too.

We lived with our fridge in the dining room for years until we had an extension built so we could fit a dishwasher in the old kitchen - it was that important to us.

JellyBeanScene · 19/03/2019 08:31

I've never had a dishwasher and I still cook a lot. It doesn't stop me.

JellyBeanScene · 19/03/2019 08:33

I put music or a radio play on while it do the dishes. It doesn't feel like that much of a chore.

JellyBeanScene · 19/03/2019 08:33

While I do the dishes, not it.

justforareply · 19/03/2019 08:49

Mine was broken for 2 weeks and it was awful. I think it's wasteful of time and water to wash up 3-4 times a day without a dishwasher but the kitchen looks untidy with dirty dishes around. I'd not be without one

QuirkyQuark · 19/03/2019 08:50

When we moved house a couple of years ago we knew there was no dishwasher in the new house so we had already had someone lined up to rip a cupboard out, do the electrics for a socket and plumb ours in moving week. No way I'd do dishes by hand, I'm way too lazy.

babysharkah · 19/03/2019 08:51

I have a tiny kitchen, really tiny, we have a slim one and tbh I wouldn't be without it even if It's on 2 it 3 times a day

cookiemonster3 · 19/03/2019 09:03

I dream of a kitchen big enough to fit in a dishwasher. I've never owned one. My eldest 2 do the dishes at night most nights but I have around a 2 foot worktop space to cook and store dishes prior to washing them and it doesn't work especially if I need into the sink for water or to drain pans when cooking.

Hopefully moving soon and I'm going to do all I can to make sure our new place has a space for a dishwasher.
