living without the dishwasher

Ive got a dishwasher, had it years. Ive got used to having it....

How common is it to NOT have one? 1 or 2 houses Im looking at dont have dishwasher space and Im thinking about how Id manage without one again. I think I would be fine. First world problem I know!

We don't have one. When we've stayed in self catering holiday places they've usually had them so we've used them there. We don't see that makes much difference to be honest. Especially if you just leave the dishes to dry.

Hoppahouse · 18/03/2019 21:35

We haven't had one for around 2 years. My hands are dry and I'm so fed up with washing up all the time 😫. We're mid extension and will have a dishwasher again in April 😅😃

HeyCarrieAnneWhatsYourGame · 18/03/2019 21:37

No, bollocks to that. Only person I know without one is my Nan and she’s 90 odd and thinks the washing machine is frivolous. The next generation won’t believe we ever lived without them.

Just had my kitchen re fitted and for the first time in my life I have a dishwasher! A little slimline one. I am so excited :)

mydogisthebest · 18/03/2019 21:46

Ours packed up about 7 years ago. Not bothered about having another one to be honest

We've just had a new kitchen fitted, we didn't replace the dishwasher. If rather wash up as we go along than have the arguments about who's turn it is to empty it.

Monstermissy36 · 18/03/2019 21:51

I've just ordered my new kitchen and I'm sacrificing the dishwasher for more cupboard space! I think it will be fine 🙏🤞

SciFiScream · 18/03/2019 21:54

I'd rather be without my washing machine than my dishwasher.

I can take all my laundry to a laundrette for a service wash but there's no where I can take my dirty dishes!

It saves me time (I reckon about 40 minutes a day) helps me keep my kitchen tidy (dirty dishes are hidden until a full load), it's greener (saves water over hand-washing) and it does a better job of washing than I do. Plus I can wash other things in the dishwasher (Lego, oven racks) so it pulls its weight in more ways than one!

Princesspond · 18/03/2019 21:59

I was just going to say the same as SciFi I’d rather not have a washing machine than lose the dishwasher. I love it, I panic if it doesn’t drain properly I wouldn’t buy a house that didn’t have space for one. On holiday we have used tabletop mini ones and I could compromise with that if there are just two or three of you.

BroomstickOfLove · 18/03/2019 22:13

We got our first dishwasher four years ago, and it was life changing. I got an extra hour and a half every day, and the eczema on my hands and arms cleared up.

Ragwort · 18/03/2019 22:18

I love my dishwasher but DH won’t use it so we have this ridiculous situation when I clear up I use the dishwasher & when he clears up he washes up by hand Confused.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 18/03/2019 22:18

I knocked down a wall and had to reboard and plaster the ceiling and walls in the two 'old' rooms to fit in a dishwasher. I had lived for four years without one. It was four years too much. Life is too short for ironing and dishwashing.

BillywigSting · 18/03/2019 22:19

I've never had one and manage just fine.

I want one though.

MissSmith80 · 18/03/2019 22:21

I hadn't had a dishwasher until this home and now wouldn't be without one. Our kitchen is teeny tiny and so the dishwasher helps us keep it vaguely tidy too

AuntVanya · 18/03/2019 22:26

I don't mind washing up by hand. I find it quite therapeutic- hot water, some exotic smelling washing up liquid. Kids buzzed off, so peace and quiet. Maybe the radio on.
Except after a roast dinner when there are too many pots and pans and baking trays.....

choirmumoftwo · 18/03/2019 22:28

Never had one, don't want one and don't understand how they save time. It really isn't hard to wash up by hand. Each to their own though.

HankyPanky04 · 18/03/2019 22:29

Never had one. Family of 6 here and people ask me 'how on earth do you cope?!' 'Erm, by washing up?'

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2019 22:31

It saves me time because I can do all sorts of other stuff while the dishwasher runs.

Ginkythefangedhellpigofdoom · 18/03/2019 22:54

For all of you that don't have a designated space.

tabletop dishwasher!

It just sits on the worktop if you have space.

Finfintytint · 18/03/2019 23:00

Always had one since early nineties. Loved them but now there’s only two of us at home and our latest one has packed up, I’ve not replaced it and have preferred to have a second freezer in its space.

GrumpyOldMare · 18/03/2019 23:02

Never had one,never will.
Too much faff loading, waiting then unloading. Just as quick if not quicker to do it by hand.
But then there's only me and my son and two cats so totally pointless.

BlueSkiesLies · 18/03/2019 23:17

I would have a DW over any other cupboard or appliance.

The WM could maybe be resisted into the bathroom, or plumbed in under the stairs.

Brazenhussy0 · 18/03/2019 23:21

Don’t have one and likely never will. (And I’m under 40.)

I used to work in a hotel kitchen (many, many years ago) and the dishwashers there never cleaned anything properly, and they were a hassle to load, wait for and then empty. Put me off them for life.
Much quicker and more thorough doing it by hand in a home setting. Just do them straight after you’ve eaten and there won’t be piles of dirty dishes left lying around.
It’s really not any more of a chore than brushing your teeth is.

If it irritates your skin, wear rubber gloves.
