living without the dishwasher

tippyteapot · 18/03/2019 20:16

Ive got a dishwasher, had it years. Ive got used to having it....

How common is it to NOT have one? 1 or 2 houses Im looking at dont have dishwasher space and Im thinking about how Id manage without one again. I think I would be fine. First world problem I know!

I wouldn't want to be without one.
Might be possible to fit a half size one in?

Lweji · 18/03/2019 20:38

I could live without one, but I wouldn't want to.
I'd rather sacrifice cupboard space.

mizu · 18/03/2019 20:39

Bought last year and the flat has a small dishwasher. 9 months in and I love it. 46 years old and have never had one before. It truly is a labour saving device.

The dishwasher in my house is me !

yumscrumfatbum · 18/03/2019 20:42

We re a family of six so I end up washing up a certain amount because the dishwasher gets over full. Mine broke last summer and as we were about to go on holiday we didn't have the money to replace for a month. I didn't miss it as much as I thought I would. Replace it we did though!

LoubyLou1234 · 18/03/2019 20:42

I've never had one, so don't miss it! Partner wanted one when we moved in together but it's not happened and shock horror he copes. Only two of us...

maxinespalour · 18/03/2019 20:43

I had one for years but now I don't. It's mostly ok, I'm super tidy & organised so generally keep on top of the washing up, also use the time to watch Netflix Grin

Mummyshark2018 · 18/03/2019 20:45

We don't have one and haven't had one for 12 years as no room in current kitchen but I really can't wait to get one when we extend the house. Washing dishes (cutlery in particular) is my worst household chore.

StocktonGalaDays · 18/03/2019 20:47

You'd have to prise mine out of my cold, dead hands. It's not just the fact that it (obviously) washes the dishes, it's the side function as storer of dirty dishes so it's easy to keep the kitchen tidy. No dirty dishes hanging around.

CoachBombay · 18/03/2019 20:49

We are a family of 3 DS is 4 uses 14plastic cups a day for water....🙈

We don't have one we cope just fine. Breakfast dishes are done quickly before we leave in the morning, all have lunch out and dinner dishes are done once food has been eaten. It's like a 10minute job of that, you will survive. 😉

dementedma · 18/03/2019 20:49

Never had one, manage fine. Dont need one. Dont have a microwave either, or a hair dryer, or a tumble drier.......luddites are us

FlaviaAlbia · 18/03/2019 20:53

We don't have one, I'd give my right arm for one and have been planning a new kitchen since DC1 came along so I spend less time washing dishes.
DH cooks and washes up a bit as he goes along but I reckon I spend half an hour on average a day doing them.

Vinorosso74 · 18/03/2019 20:55

We don't have one. More a space thing and aren't too bothered. When we visit my parents the amount of time spent rinsing dishes I could have washed them in the sink.

AuntVanya · 18/03/2019 21:01

I have one but don't use it for washing dishes. I use it for storing my recycling until collection day, and keep other miscellaneous bits and pieces in it. Household = me and 2 DCs

DecumusScotti · 18/03/2019 21:03

They save water as well as time. I don’t think I could bear to go back to the soul sucking misery of washing up by hand

sleepwhenidie · 18/03/2019 21:08

Maybe if I lived alone. Otherwise I wouldn’t go without one. Love them so much that I convinced DH to have 2 when we did the kitchen. Never any dirty dishes hanging around 😊!

PuzzlingPuzzle · 18/03/2019 21:09

The only time I’ve not had one was fresher’s year in halls at uni. When we moved into a flat share for 2nd year it was non-negotiable. My ultimate dream (if we ever leave our small city flat for the suburbs) is a kitchen with 2 dishwashers so you can stack one whilst the other is running. Personally I’d never consider a house without space for one unless the kitchen was horrid and I could justify gutting it and redesigning from scratch.

sleepwhenidie · 18/03/2019 21:09

vinorosso you actually shouldn’t rinse, it reduces effectiveness of dishwasher tabs..just scrape off excess food 😊

Singlenotsingle · 18/03/2019 21:11

TWO dishwashers! Oh be still, my beating heart! I'd need a bigger kitchen! (starts to check out Rightmove).

Sparklingbrook · 18/03/2019 21:11

No rinsing here either.

I also like that all the dirty dishes aren't hanging about and you can just get them out and put them straight into the cupboards.

CookPassBabtridge · 18/03/2019 21:14

Mine broke recently. It was my first one! SadI was gutted but I have a deep belfast sink in this house so washing up is easier than other houses I've lived in, and I can store the draining things in the dishwasher rather than on the side.

keepforgettingmyusername · 18/03/2019 21:16

Mine stopped working a while ago and I just washed things by hand. Recently got it fixed only because the washing machine needed repaired and I got the bloke to fix both at the same time. I don't know how I've survived all this time without it now I have it again especially having a baby. Naptimes were just spent washing bottles and dishes when I could have just spent £20 months ago and had all that time to sit on my ass Confused

CharDeeMacDennis · 18/03/2019 21:27

I've never had one. I still think of them as something only rich / posh people have - I know that's not the case any more, but I'm still somehow surprised at how many people have them!

Vinorosso74 · 18/03/2019 21:31

sleepwhenidie it's DM who stands there rinsing before loading the dishwasher. I agree it's pointless!
