Currently in hospital waiting for surgery. I'm absolutely starving and not aloud to suck so much as a sweet! Euuurrrggghhhh

What the hell happens in emergency situations? I've had this procedure done in the past and was rushed here in an ambulance. Don't remember being asked if I'd eaten after 6am!

In an emergency, you balance the risk of the immediate need for anaesthesia Vs the potential that the person will vomit and aspirate (inhale) the vomit, which is very dangerous.
In planned surgery you can remove that risk by not eating.
It's an inconvenience but it will make your surgery safer.

I’m on day 6 of nil by mouth....in hospital! On a drip etc one day certainly won’t hurt.

I had surgery recently was nil by mouth from midnight the evening before I was taken to theatre at 5pm next day!!! Not water nothing. Yes it was uncomfortable and inconvenient but I survived!

Worst bit was when I came round I felt nauseous and didn't want to eat but had to force down a dry cheese sandwich because they would let me go home.
