I’ve been on sick leave for over six months now from my current job. Since I’ve been feeling a bit better I’ve been applying for other less stressful roles. I’ve just been offered a new job however I need to give three months notice to leave my current job. I’m aware I could be singed off for the rest of my notice period however I’m wondering if it would be easier for both myself and my current employer if I left straight away.

Yes I imagine the chances of them being prepared to release you earlier are pretty high in the circumstances.

I imagine they would be delighted to shorten the notice period based on the information given. Just ask.

Just ask! It can usually be varied by mutual agreement. If you've been off for a long time and have a new opportunity in the bag I don't see why your current employer wouldn't at least be open to considering a shorter notice period, or in fact just letting you go. You might have to discuss and agree with them what to do with any annual leave that you have accrued whilst you've been off sick.

Good luck!

By the sounds of it they may well be happy to let you go the second you ask.
