How can an American transfer money to the U.K

Hi
I have a friend who needs to transfer money to me. She wanted to use Zelle, but my bank HSBC has partnered with Zelle but hasn't launched yet.

Does anyone know how Western Union works, what info would in need to give her.

Many thanks in advance

If she speaks to her bank she can transfer from there. She’ll need to be clear she’ll pay all fees as they normally charge at both ends and you’ll get the receiving fee if she doesn’t do that.

Paypal

Everyone has a paypal account these days don't they? Takes seconds.

PayPal, Western Union (need your IBAN number), and just a direct bank to bank transfer. She can go into any bank branch and do it. I have transferred from Bank of America to HSBC.

Bank transfers. My parents do them from the US all the time. You just need the international banking code (can't remember the proper name for it) and the normal acct number/sort code etc.

PayPal is the best.

Fees on PayPal are 4%. Try Xoom, which is owned by PayPal. It makes its money on the exchange rate, so watch that.

Paypal, or Transferwise is also good.

Lilao · 16/03/2019 20:31

Transferwise was very good when I used it a few years ago for my sister in Australia

hedgehoglurker · 16/03/2019 20:33

Transferwise

Rory786 · 16/03/2019 20:56

I don't have paypal.

Will look into transfer wise, thanks everyone.

I did bank to bank to transfer a lot all at once, I needed the IBAN for my UK account but it was all easy and straightforward. For smaller amounts I used to use Xe.com, tiny amounts Paypal.

EmmaC78 · 16/03/2019 22:22

Paypal is easy to set up.

I was going to say Xoom - DD1 lives in the US & she has sent money that way.

There will be charges of one kind or another whichever way you send it but DD1 thought this was the best way for her.

I’ve used currencyfair previously.

You can pay old-fashioned US$ cheques into a UK bank account. Barclays will charge the exchange rate but there's no extra fees.
