Film suggestions for dd, 11.

I am at home with dd, just the two of us, and the weather is vile, so we need a Saturday afternoon film, and I am stumped...
She likes period dramas, eg Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Jane Eyre. She doesn’t like things that are violent, or frightening although recently enjoyed Lord of the Rings ( can’t watch the Hobbit today as that is saved for when we can all watch together).
Could be something old, doesn’t need to be current.

My dd likes:

Ballet Shoes - the one with Emma Watson.

The Railway Children.

Carrie's War - although it has some violence/smacking but you can explain that's how it was at that time.

The Sound of Music.

Nanny Mcphee 1 & 2

She loves Ballet Shoes, but we watched that recently sadly. Also seen The Railway Children.
Haven’t watched Carrie’s War, so will have a google.

The Robin Hood one with Kevin Costner and Alan Rickman? Or would that we too much?

There was a Three Muskeer one aeons ago, I think with Charlie Sheen. Bit of a mix of comedy and action.

Kate and Leopold 2001, Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman. Here's the trailer:

ChoudeBruxelles · 16/03/2019 12:34

Young Victoria?

Handay · 16/03/2019 12:41

What about a good old glossy belting melodrama? All that heaven allows, imitation of life, double indemnity, Mildred pierce, spellbound, the postman always rings twice etc? I used to love watching films like that with my mum on a rainy Saturday.

tarheelbaby · 16/03/2019 12:42

dd11 has enjoyed:

Nutcracker & 4 Realms - beautiful costumes, but sadly not much ballet.
How to Train Your Dragon - recently saw newest one in cinema

What about:
Wizard of Oz
Sound of Music (as per pp)
Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews again)
Galaxy Quest - sci-fi spoof referencing Alien/Star Trek, quite witty but not scary

SnugglySnerd · 16/03/2019 12:43

Some Like it Hot or Gentlemen Prefer Blondes? Both very funny and fine for her age as far as I remember. Disclaimer - I haven't watched either of them for ages.

Handay · 16/03/2019 12:44

Agree that Wizard of Oz is a brilliant call if she hasn't seen that already. I think everyone should watch that; it's incredible. Also 80 years old this year!

EleanorLavish · 16/03/2019 12:45

Love Galaxy Quest, so funny.
What about Little Women? Gone With the Wind?

SirVixofVixHall · 16/03/2019 12:47

Lots of really great suggestions, i am now writing a list for future ref, as these are just the sort of things we both like. V grateful to all posters.

We watched Patrick last night (young woman gets pug/changes life). Just out on Sky.

Vitalogy · 16/03/2019 12:59

Belle 2013, Gugu Mbatha-Raw:

Guylian2019 · 16/03/2019 13:05

Cool Runnings.
Dawson's Creek boxset.

SirVixofVixHall · 16/03/2019 13:09

Ooh. Belle looks great, think I will save that for when dd1 (14) is here , maybe tomorrow we might watch that all together.
Dd did love Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, hasn’t seen Some Like it Hot yet.

I haven’t ever seen the Alan Rickman Robin Hood, so that is worth thinking of.

I was 11 when Robin Hood Prince of Thieves
Came out in the cinema and I loved it.

Ellapaella · 16/03/2019 13:57

Also Mermaids with Cher and Winona Ryder is a great film - think it's a PG.

Goodnight Mr Tom

Warning about the Alan Rickman / Kevin Costner Robin Hood!

I tried it with DF at 11 because I remember loving it, but it's Soo dark at the beginning. We got through the bit in the Arabic jail where the guy's hand is about to be chopped off, but when we got to the bit where they find Duncan with his eyes put out, DD freaked and we had to turn it off (watched Ella Enchanted instesd, if I recall)

User165443456 · 16/03/2019 14:49

DD at the beginning, not DF

SirVixofVixHall · 16/03/2019 15:39

Eyes put out not sounding good...she is sensitive and nightmare prone...
