Film suggestions for dd, 11.

I am at home with dd, just the two of us, and the weather is vile, so we need a Saturday afternoon film, and I am stumped...
She likes period dramas, eg Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Jane Eyre. She doesn’t like things that are violent, or frightening although recently enjoyed Lord of the Rings ( can’t watch the Hobbit today as that is saved for when we can all watch together).
Could be something old, doesn’t need to be current.

Loads of great suggestions. She is old enough for reasonably sophisticated stuff , but too little for anything over sexual or violent. We live in a remote rural area, so she is a “young” 11 in some ways. She enjoyed the series of Bleak House, so that kind of thing works well.
She loves Dr Who. She also loved Detectorists, which is a 15, but because of the swearing, which I am less bothered about as she hears enough swearing on the school bus !

I was going to suggest Ella Enchanted cos I’m watching it right now! How about Stardust?

Oh the melodrama! Amazing films but where would anyone source them from too watch instantly on rainy Saturday...

Handay · 16/03/2019 18:17

Streaming! A lot of old films are available now, sometimes for free if people have put them on YouTube/dailymotion/vimeo although YouTube has tightened up a lot. If you've got a smart TV or a plugin you can watch them on your telly. It's amazing what people upload, and all three of those ones are legitimate legal websites.

Handay · 16/03/2019 18:19

Just google [name of film] full movie.

Handay · 16/03/2019 18:31

Otherwise you can pay to stream through play or YouTube for between £2.50-£3.50 each one.

Desperateforspring · 16/03/2019 18:55

Wow ok brilliant!!
I'd love too watch those with Dc.

OP mine loved great expectations, some like it hot

EleanorLavish · 16/03/2019 20:17

What about the likes of Calamity Jane, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, the Harvey Girls?
Also A League of Their Own?

SheisMammyof2 · 16/03/2019 20:22

Probably too late now but The Princess Bride is a great one if she hasn't seen it already.

burgundyjumper · 16/03/2019 20:31

Aquamarine

Spirit, stallion of the Cimarron

Freaky Friday

Another vote for Calamity Jane from me too.

GetSchwifty · 16/03/2019 20:35

The secret garden

SirVixofVixHall · 16/03/2019 20:38

Yes we really love Calamity Jane, haven’t watched it for a while, so it is due a re watch. We ended up baking a cake instead today, so film will be tomorrow. This thread has so many great suggestions for this age group, I have been listing them all.

I've been wondering about the Kevin Costner Robin Hood but isn't there a horrible 'jokey' scene where the Sheriff of Nottingham tries to rape Marion? I think it's all over quite quickly but I'd not like to watch that with my son.

Handay · 16/03/2019 23:32

Np desperate. I love films. Another thing to do is go through the listings for the talking pictures and TCM channels if you have them and record some to watch on days like today. There's a lot of shit on there but they do show classics as well. For example A Night To Remember is on this week. If you've got a TiVo box you can even search for the film you want and set it to record it when it comes on in the future.

Handay · 16/03/2019 23:40

We watched Calamity Jane recently! Definitely a hit here! I think the old musicals are always a good bet. Singing in the rain, kiss me kate, on the town. I love watching old movies anyway but I also think they're great for this age group because they're not "childish" but also due to censorship there's nothing you wouldn't want them seeing, mostly.

ET
Ghostbusters
Just Add Magic on Amazon prime
Big
Black Beauty

Loving this thread

SirVixofVixHall · 17/03/2019 20:06

Yes, so agree on old films, adult enough, but nothing too disturbing. Compare with “Suffragette” which has a 12 rating ( dd will be 12 soonish) yet is really distressing, with violence and sexual abuse. I almost took older dd to see it as she was then 12, and I was so relieved that I went with a friend instead.

Yy. I think avoiding the censor made the directors be more creative. I mean, there's plenty of infidelity/abuse/murder etc in old films, but it's not explicit. It's actually quite beautiful, if that doesn't sound too weird. A different art form.

GreenDragon75 · 17/03/2019 23:10

We all love Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama. If you can find Jumanji that was really good too. Also have you seen all the Harry Potter films? We all like those and can watch them over and over (adult dcs too).
I quite like the Goosebumps films too.

dontgobaconmyheart · 18/03/2019 05:40

Not a film do maybe I'm no help but has she seen the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, it knocks spots of the films. Anne with an E (modern TV adaptation of Anne of green gables) on Netflix would be potentially an idea too.

Film wise- the classics like secret garden, a little princess, little women etc..? Lost in Austen, ballet shoes for something newer.

Your post reminds me so much of my childhood (in the 90's) I was quite young and naive for my age and my equally old fashioned mum and I would watch the BBC pride and prejudice on rainy days, or things like little house on the prairie, the old Anne of green gables adaptations, the railway children or similar.

Grundtal · 18/03/2019 13:45

I was going to say Kate and Leopold. Also Just Visiting is similar. My 11yo niece is obsessed with Titanic atm.

AdamNichol · 18/03/2019 15:36

Labyrinth

Ribbonsonabox · 18/03/2019 15:41

Ever After- it's a version of Cinderella with Drew Barrymore and Angelica Housten. I always watch it when I'm sad!
Lost in Austen is also really good.
Belle
Stardust

The new Anne of GreenGables on Netflix called Anne with an E, is really really good!

PrivateIsles · 18/03/2019 19:20

I initially thought of Saving Mr Banks about PL Travers/Walt Disney, and how Disney wanted to make Mary Poppins into a film. However there are a couple of possibly dark/grisly bits in it so it might not suit.

Agree re Legally Blonde though, I love that film. Such a feel good movie.

I'm a massive fan of old films and there are some great ones already mentioned. Other options could be:

My Fair Lady
Blithe Spirit
A Matter of Life and Death
Roman Holiday?? It's a while since I saw that though so not sure.

I think someone already mentioned Calamity Jane - love that as well.

We always used to watch The Adventures of Robin Hood (Erroll Flynn/Olivia del Havilland version) The Court Jester etc with my mum when we were about that age and loved them. Still do!!

PrivateIsles · 18/03/2019 19:22

Now I just want to watch everything that PPs have mentioned...
