Primary School Choir - What are your children singing?

Just that really. I’m setting up a new choir at school, and the children would like to sing modern/pop songs. Please can you tell me what your children are currently learning?

Thanks.

Songs from the Greatest Showman are v popular at our choir

Thanks Birkenstocks - yes, most of the children love The Greatest Showman, but I’m pretty over it. A bit like how I feel about Frozen!

Oh yes, we too have songs from The Greatest Showman, mixed with a little Taylor Swift and Katie Perry. And a bit of God stuff as it's a church school. I was schooled in the UK in the 80's and we sang and sang and sang at school. Including lots of wonderful folk songs and even sea shanties. I really hope they are not lost in favour of endless variations on 'Roar'. I know, I'm getting old.

OP- you have a wonderful opportunity to teach these kids the songs and stories woven through their own cultures and their friends cultures. Find some awesome Nigerian, Irish, English, Bengali songs and think out of the box. Very best of luck, I'm quite envious!

DD's did lots of musical songs, Mathilda, School of Rock, all kind of Disney like Beauty and the Beast. She is also in a choir outside school and it is quite similar, again Greates Showman (I can't stand it anymore).

The older ones (Y5/6) were also doing Queen, ABBA.

With pop artists I would double-check the lyrics carefully and maybe divide by age. I am not sure all parents would be happy having Y1/2/3 singing Little Mix.

They did songs relating to work the school did as well, they had Reagee, Motown as part of Black History Months for example and performed in front of the school. At an "around the world" project they did a variety of folk songs from other countries.

They also did songs for Christmas, Harvest, Summer concert. These were often more "cute" ones for the younger year groups.

Similar to above, but my child's choir also took part in young voices, so do lots of songs from there

Dd is learning 'when i grow up' from matilda and 'true colours' and can't stop the feeling ' which both appear in the Trolls soundtrack.

The Grumpy Teacher

What shall we do with the grumpy teacher?
What shall we do with the grumpy teacher?
What shall we do with the grumpy teacher?
Early in the morning!
Hide some sharp pins under her chair,
Put some blu-tac in her hair,
Ha, ha, ha, ha, we don’t care!
Early in the morning!

Don’t put us in detention,
We just want some more attention,
We just don’t deserve suspension,
Early in the morning!

What shall we do with the grumpy teacher? x3
Early in the morning!
Dig a deep hole and push him in,
Make him eat lunch in a rubbish bin,
Get a big knife and shave his chin,
Early in the morning!

Don’t tell my mum about me,
She will get very angry,
Stop me from playing Wii,
Early in the morning!

What shall we do with the grumpy teacher? x3
Early in the morning!
Leave her in a cage at the zoo,
Make her take a bath in sticky glue,
Take her back to school to SHOUT at you,
Early in the morning!

What shall we do with the grumpy teacher x3
Early in the morning.
Hang her on the hook behind the classroom door
Tie her up and leave her in the P.E. store
Make her be with Dereck Drew for ever more
Early in the morning

Please Miss we're only joking.
Don't mean to be provoking
How come your ears are smoking
Early in the morning.

What shall we do with the grumpy teacher? x3
Early in the morning.
Send him out to duty when the sleet is sleeting
Keep him after school to take a parents meeting.
Stand him in the hall to watch the children eating.
Early in the morning.

Please sir we're only teasing.
Don't mean to be displeasing.
Help that's our necks your squeezing.
Early in the morning.

What shall we do with the grumpy teacher? x3
Early in the morning?
Tickle her toes with a hairy creature,
Leave her in the jungle where the ants can reach her.
BRING HER BACK ALIVE TO BE A CLASSROOM TEACHER!
Early - in the - morning!
