Mine is: line the spines of your books against the front edge of the bookshelves. Having the spines in a straight line at the front of the shelf looks more pleasing than having them pressed up against the back of the shelf sticking out at different depths.
(and yes, before anyone asks, I do read my books as well as admiring them as aesthetically pleasing physical objects)
