Good morning. Is anyone a car insurance expert on here? Could you help me with the query below please, regarding DD's car insurance?
DD took out an insurance policy and paid the full year's premium up front. The policy ran from 12.2.18 - 12.2.19.
In January 2019, the insurance company contacted her to ask if she wanted to renew. She said yes she did, that she would be paying for the next policy in monthly instalments. They sent her the renewal certificate but no log in details so she can't view it and the date it started (which should be 12.2.2019). DD has paid no premiums for this new policy.
On 31.1.19 DD had a crash which was 50/50 fault. Luckily everyone was unhurt, but DD's car was a write-off. Insurance company have been very slow to deal with the claim, but they offered a price for her car which she accepted.
Now the insurance company are saying they are taking the full year's premium (£693) for her next year's policy out of the settlement figure.
I don't understand how they can do this when the crash happened when she was covered by the previous year's insurance policy. Also, after 31.1.19, there was no car to insure as it was written off.
In addition, the insurance company had sent DD a text back in January saying that they would not start the new insurance policy unless she texted them back, which she did not do.
Can anyone advise please?
Thank you xx
