Anyone know a way to unblock an ear quickly and safely?

I shouldn’t have poked a cotton bud in. That was daft. But now I have I’ve clearly impacted whatever wax is in there and I am nearly completely minus hearing in that ear. It feels full and fuzzy and a bit sore. It’s hard to hear what’s being said and I’m travelling tomorrow . Anyone got any secret unblocking tips that are safe or recommend any miracle drops I can get at Boots tomorrow? All I have to hand is olive oil but think that might make my hearing even worse in the short term. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure heat can soften it. What about a hot cloth over it?

Samind · 14/03/2019 19:07

Olive oil or baby oil too. Hopefully you have some in the house 🙂

HeritageCarrot · 14/03/2019 19:07

Samind thanks. I shall give that a go right now.

Ear drops containing bicarbonate of soda are good. Don’t know if you can buy over the counter though or if they are prescription only.

Otex drops have always worked well and quickly for me!

MunchMunch · 14/03/2019 19:21

Otex might work. I'm sure that's the one that fizzes away in your ear and loosens the gunk.

There's also another fizzy concoction but I can't think of it's name, it's on the top of my tongue...gah! More of a chemical name...

RedSkyLastNight · 14/03/2019 19:23

Olive oil twice a day. If it's very compacted you may have to get the ear syringed.

MunchMunch · 14/03/2019 19:23

Hydrogen Peroxide - has to google or my head would have been battered all night!

Jammydodger1981 · 14/03/2019 19:23

MunchMunch hydrogen peroxide? That’s what dp uses and it goes all fizzy and warm.

Knittedfairies · 14/03/2019 19:28

Ask the pharmacist for advice.

I feel your pain OP my ear has been blocked since Sunday & it's driving me bananas!
I've been using olive oil but nothing seems to be working

ScarletBitch · 14/03/2019 20:15

Hi OP, try blow your nose, crazy as it sounds your ears might need to pop and blowing your nose helps this. Warm olive oil will help. Hope you feel better soon

HeritageCarrot · 14/03/2019 20:22

Am currently trying the heat tactic. Laying down watching master chef with a hot flannel in a plastic bag pressed against the rogue ear. If this doesn’t do the job (it’s very comforting) I will stop by boots for something fizzy . Have blowed nose but no improvement thus far. Thanks everyone. Marble hope you are soon unclogged also. It’s very discombobulating.

look up an ear clear clinic in your area.
sometimes opticians with hearing department do suction as well,
very safe & quick.

StraffeHendrik · 14/03/2019 20:50

Ear syringe from amazon prime. The ear syringe is actually a water squirter. Soften first with ear drops. Be sure to use water close to body temp or it will make you dizzy. you might need to be a bit persistent (I sometimes get through a litre of water) but it will work eventually and a great big pea of wax will fall out (yuk)

HeritageCarrot · 14/03/2019 21:02

Am carrying on with heat and tomorrow will try get express earex en route. Will bear syringe in mind if that’s not working. There is an ear clear place where I’m going but it’s rather a pricy option so hope diy does the job.
