Student Accomadation

DS is moving from halls of residence to a private student flat for his next year.
Him and a group of friends have found a flat they like. All good.
However DS is saying the Landlord is wanting a copy of MY pay slip as proof of income and passport and driving licence.
This seems like alot of very personal information to be giving a complete stranger.
Is this normal?

I absolutely WOULD NOT be guarantor for a shared flat. No way.

DS said 4/5 signed their agreements immediately, without their parents seeing them!

Mind you, his friends are all from quite wealthy backgrounds; I mean, we're not poor but they are considerably richer than us, so maybe they are happy to be guarantors to all & sundry? 🤔

I wouldn't be guarantor for a whole flat either.

Do you have Facebook? There's lots of advice on things like this on WIWIKAU

(What I wish I knew about university)

We've never been asked to provide financial information when guaranteeing DS's student flats/houses. In fact I signed the one for the current house and I don't have any income at all - no one queried it.

DH has signed one for someone else's student accomodation (that's a whole other story - don't get me started on that!) and wasn't required to provide any financial information and he's not even related to the student or ever lived at the same address as them!

My son is in his third year and has rented a private flat for years 2 and 3. I had to hand over as much info as his guarantor as I would have actually renting the place! Still not as bad as a mortgage renewal when they went through my bank statement line by line questioning each expense 😕 x no such thing as privacy any more
