Cornedbeef hash with garlic

FullOnMonet1975 · 13/03/2019 17:18

Just mentioned to my very traditional DF that I put garlic in cornedbeef hash. He nearly had an heart attack & went all Peter Kay on me. Anyone else put garlic in CBH? Smile

My recipe is 100% inauthentic, does involve garlic and does not involve mashing anything. Basically - spicy seasoning, corned beef, baked beans, onions, garlic, peas, chunks of potato, stock and a glug of Lea and Perrins.

flameycakes I don't put chilli & honey in CBH but I do put them in baked beans Smile

These recipes are the reason I get stressed eating at other people's houses.
Corned beef hash is fried onions mashed up with corned beef and potato, then fried so you get lots of crispy bits. Serve with peas and s blob of butter.
No garlic, leeks, mushrooms, carrots, bisto, oxo or anything other grim intruders.

this thread has proved that give twenty women a meal to cook and they will all do it differently, at the end of the day does it matter how you personally cook your CBH its what you and your family like to eat my friend does hers the wet way and i cant eat hers but love mine

I never cook without garlic. Always put in my corned beef hash!

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 14/03/2019 16:28

You're all making it wrong Grin

To make CBH you slice potatoes, carrots, an onion and corned beef. Put it in a big pan with 4 oxo cubes and a big splash of Hendos and white pepper. Pour water over it all. Boil it and serve it over the top of pancakes with HP sauce on top.

DH refuses to eat meat that comes from a can, so I rarely have it any more. But oh my gosh it's amazing.

MrsFlump · 14/03/2019 16:40

My granny made it the same way as Notso. The crispy bits were lovely. I ate it with pickled red cabbage and a crusty roll with butter. I do miss her.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 14/03/2019 16:44

I prefer corned beef pie, corned beef and raw diced onion mixed in with buttery mash then put in pie dish with ready made puff pastry

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/03/2019 19:27

We love that too, served with salad and pickled red cabbage.

Atalune · 14/03/2019 19:35

We used to have it like a stovie

Sliced potatoes, layered with Sliced onions, slices of corned beef and repeat in a big deep casserole dish. Then pour over some oxo beef stock and bubble away for an hour or so and then let the top lAyer crisp up in the over.

Serve with white buttered bread and HP sauce.

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/03/2019 19:58

Hang on, that's not how you make stovies.

Indeed. I had no idea some people see CBH as a dry dish involving mashed spuds. Mine is like DM makes, with tweaks suggested by DP, based on his childhood memories, so it's potatoes, carrots, onions, pearl barley and sprouts simmered in beef stock and Worcestershire sauce with a bit of Tom puree until the veg is nearly done, then I add cubed corned beef and really thick bisto best. Then put dumplings on the top and when the dumplings are nearly done, finish off uncovered in a hot oven so they go all crispy.

flameycakes · 15/03/2019 07:01

I put butter in baked beans and cook them down till the sauce is thick x

CookieSwirlC · 15/03/2019 07:10

Mine is cubed potatoes boiled then fried with cubed corned beef and onions and a splash of Worcester sauce until it’s all crispy and golden, plonked on a plate with a good squeeze of ketchup on top.

Izzy24 · 15/03/2019 07:25

What a disturbing thread.

Thank goodness for words if reason from Notso and Cookie 😳

Lungelady · 15/03/2019 07:55

Corned beef should stay in its tin back in the seventies. Horrible stuff. And I am Northern 😀

AdoraBell · 15/03/2019 07:59

My FIL would possibly drop dead if he knew that I use garlic.

Southwest12 · 15/03/2019 09:45

I read this thread this morning and then one of the options offered for dinner/lunch in hospital today as corned beef hash! So I’ve ordered it.

Ontopofthesunset · 15/03/2019 10:01

Corned beef hash is a crispy dish made in a frying pan a bit like bubble and squeak but with onions, potatoes, corned beef and maybe Worcester sauce. It's not a stew....surely?

Theimpossiblegirl · 15/03/2019 10:04

I saw pulled salted beef hash on a menu recently. Once I ordered pulled salmon and it was just mushed up tinned salmon, so I'm assuming this was just a fancy way of charging £££ for corned beef hash.

SoftBlocks · 15/03/2019 10:04

I thought I was being radical just putting fried onions in. My DM used to make mash and then mix in a tin of corned beef et voila! I was amazed at people putting cheese on it!
