Just that really. A whole world just out of reach.

I'm still gutted that I can't get the best Discworld novel every Christmas :(

My brother loves his books I tried but was never a fan, such a sad ☹️ loss.

With immense respect and credit to Sprog on reddit...

The sun goes down upon the Ankh,
And slowly, softly fades -
Across the Drum; the Royal Bank;
The River-Gate; the Shades.

A stony circle's closed to elves;
And here, where lines are blurred,
Between the stacks of books on shelves,
A quiet 'Ook' is heard.

A copper steps the city-street
On paths he's often passed;
The final march; the final beat;
The time to rest at last.

He gives his badge a final shine,
And sadly shakes his head -
While Granny lies beneath a sign
That says: 'I aten't dead.'

The Luggage shifts in sleep and dreams;
It's now. The time's at hand.
For where it's always night, it seems,
A timer clears of sand.

And so it is that Death arrives,
When all the time has gone...
But dreams endure, and hope survives,
And Discworld carries on.

GNU Sir pTerry.

What’s GNU? I love his books!

BrendaUrie · 12/03/2019 17:02

Gnu??

MrSlant · 12/03/2019 17:03

Beautiful poem Pengling, excellent find.

It's a sadder, less intelligent, world without him.

Did you know there's a browser add-on you can install, and code you can add to your webpage if you are a page owner, that sends pTerry's name through the clacks? www.gnuterrypratchett.com/index.php

If have the firefox add-on and occasionally see a little clacks appear on my menubar when I visit a page that has the code.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 12/03/2019 17:07

GNU STP 😢

Pengling · 12/03/2019 17:08

In Going Postal, after John Dearheart's death, his name is immortalised in the clacks by the message "GNU John Dearheart" - the GNU code means his name flies around the clacks forever. After Pratchett died someone designed a code you can embed in your website that puts "GNU Terry Pratchett" in the website header. A subtle and perfect tribute.

I love spotting Discworld-derived usernames on Mumsnet Smile I had one for a while but I lost access to that account in one of the hacks Sad

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 12/03/2019 17:14

Pengling that poem took my breath 😢
For pp that asked-
GNU is from Going Postal. It's a code in the clacks that echoes a name down the line.
"A man is not dead while his name is still spoken" Terry Pratchett

AornisHades · 12/03/2019 17:16

I still have one book to read. I don't want to ever be without a Pratchett to read for the first time.

Huntlybyelection · 12/03/2019 17:20

I haven't finished the last two books. I need to but I'm not ready yet.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 12/03/2019 17:28

That poem is beautiful. I'm re- reading men at arms for about the 10th time. I love his books so much and every time I reread one and finish it I get that little pang of regret/ sadness that I'll never read a new one again.

MrSlant · 12/03/2019 17:35

Just got DS3 started on Eric then Mort, he's really enjoying his style and I like to think I'm teaching my child how to become a critical thinker.
