Venus Gillette advert: Don't forget shave your arms ladies

Not just your legs, armpits, fanny, Gillette want to remind you as a woman to be ready for anything, make sure you've shaved your arms.

So at least if I forget to tell DD, she might catch the advert and realise she needs to shave her arms.

Hmm

🙄Jesus Christ.

BetterEatCheese · 12/03/2019 13:48

I took it as a nod to women who want to shave their arms or are very self conscious about their dark arm hair. It did stand out to me though, had to rewind it to check I had seen right

megletthesecond · 12/03/2019 13:52

I can't think of anything worse than stubbly arms.
I bleached mine for 25yrs (I was always teased about my werewolf arms) but I've stopped bleaching them now dd is growing up and noticed her arm hair is dark too.

howdoyoukeepawaveuponthesand · 12/03/2019 13:54

Women and men both naturally have body hair.

But women have to shave it. Why? So Gillette can make more money.

Don’t fall for it, women! I stopped years ago. Best thing I ever did.

PrawnOfCreation · 12/03/2019 14:08

A few years back I stopped shaving and started only wearing (smart but) comfortable clothes. It's like being a bloke without the fear of random erections.

My family still love me.
My husband is still attracted to me.
I still have friends.
It's like I'm still a real person, deserving of love and respect. Blew my mind.

No TV here. No magazines. No doubt society will catch my children and tell them they are BAD and dirty, hopefully not before I've ingrained how wonderful they are, just as they are.

AdamNichol · 12/03/2019 14:27

There are a load of posts about the causes of the current shift towards extensive intimate grooming - mostly pointing towards the porn industry as the generator. But, my mantra for finding causes is pretty much always 'follow the money'. Who is getting paid as a result of depilation from the eyelashes down? And who is trying to promote this to men now?

WhoWasIt · 12/03/2019 15:12

I don't shave anything. I shave my pits once per year for my holiday, borrowing my OH razor and that's it. Even they only get a once over prior to going.
I once shaved my fanny a few years ago and my OH got a shaving rash.

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 12/03/2019 15:16

I thought the person in that ad, shaving their arms had tattoos there and that was why. Possibly wanted to show off the tattoos on a smooth hairless arm. Yes there are other hair removing ways but that's what i thought.

Lisette1940 · 12/03/2019 15:24

albus I thought the same.

VladmirsPoutine · 12/03/2019 15:30

Does it have to be an either/or war. Some women want and do shave their arm pits/vulvas/legs/whatever. This is not the feminist hill I personally will die on but each to their own.

WhoWasIt · 12/03/2019 15:38

@Vladimirs. The only reason i don't is simply because i can't be arsed to.

Fluffyears · 12/03/2019 16:08

I do take off my body hair cos I’m so dark i’d Love to have the confidence to leave it.

AdamNichol · 12/03/2019 16:11

vladimirs You are correct that this is all about choice. However, without wanting to get too far into the philosophy about the existence of real choice, the 'war' is more about the acceptance of the varied choices vs a consumerist approach that will attack the 'other' choice as a lesser choice and pressure undesired conformity.
That is to say, choice is good until people feel their choices ostracise them; especially when one of the options is supported by consumerism.

AdamNichol · 12/03/2019 16:12

Demonstrated when some posters say they'd like a different choice but lack the confidence to be themselves.

chickensaresafehere · 12/03/2019 16:21

Me & dh raised our unshaved eyebrows at it.
I can't remember the exact words, but it was something like 'be who you want to be' bollocks. As long as that 'you' shaves their arms & all other hairy body parts that might upset other people.
Hmm

amusedbush · 12/03/2019 16:38

I shaved my arms as a teenager and my mum told me to stop being so ridiculous. It didn't grow back for years! It's about 15 years later and I do have arm hair now but it has come back quite short and soft.

I don't know how, considering the rate my leg hair and pubes grow back Blush

HJWT · 12/03/2019 16:39

I shave my arms they don't come back as stubble....

Summerfalls · 12/03/2019 16:40

Another that shaves their arms and doesn’t come back stubbly

Smotheroffive · 12/03/2019 16:46

Just to ad to the hair shaming adds...recently overheard a college lad telling a female peer that her legs were hairy and why on earth didnt she shave them?!?! Confused
Heartily tsk tsking in my head as I turned to leave anyway when I heard her say, well I don't much like blokes that want me to change, so it doesn't matter!!

Literally, mind blown! I don't think that happens much, and even rarer to have been within earshot of such a rarified wonderful creature standing up to the utter utter bollox!

Smotheroffive · 12/03/2019 16:48

Oh yes, and that 'boys don't like hairy women'...hence the reply about not much caring about those kind of boys.

FlirtyRomanticToast · 12/03/2019 16:49

Mine do Blush

Smotheroffive · 12/03/2019 16:49

Pffft....the best a man can get!! Well no, women as they come are the best as man can get. Women accept men, fully attired in their hairy cloaks

Pinkkahori · 12/03/2019 16:55

When I was younger I knew a girl who shaved her arms. They definitely grew back stubbly. If you brushed against her arm it was obvious.
I shared a house with her for years and literally never once saw her without a lot of make up, her hair done and contacts in. She always kept her hair dyed beautifully.
I often wondered if I would actually recognise her in her natural state.

VladmirsPoutine · 12/03/2019 16:56

AdamNichol I do very much appreciate and agree with your point. It's just all the "I haven't shaved my arms pits since 1986! Fuck the patriarchy! I've even grown my eyebrows down to my hips!" sort of thing that really jars...

reallemonade · 12/03/2019 17:10

I shave legs, arm pits and pubes. I like men who shave as well though, I'm not attracted to hairy men, sexually a hairy man is not attractive to me at all.
