I've read that the sight of padlocks makes thieves more likely to break in because they assume there's valuable stuff inside. (There isn't in ours, just don't want the door damaged.) Is there a good substitute for a padlock, without replacing the clasp on the door made for one, and which is less fiddly and quicker to use than string or wire?
