Charity / volunteering asking for DOB- query?

I started to apply online as a volunteer for a national charity- the role would be solely online. One of the *-d questions (obligatory) was my date of birth. I'm reluctant to give this for two reasons

1 Government advice is never to give your DOB unless legally required as it can be a data security risk (and I'm not convinced small charities are the best at data security)

2 my age has little bearing on the position because my CV will show my experience over many years which is more relevant than my DOB.

3 I don't want to be judged on my DOB.

I've not completed the application form for this reason and wonder how to proceed.

As DOBs are not required - or legal- on job application forms, is this charity an exception?
