What kind of exercise do you do?

EEELA · 11/03/2019 12:49

What kind of exercise or which sports do you do? And how often?

Mainly asking if you're of a relatively 'normal' weight and not trying to lose lots of weight/aren't training for something very intense/etc.

I want to find a sport or exercise that I enjoy. I'm a bit overweight but not massively (know that it will reduce once I actually start moving...). I used to run but found it pretty boring alone and have moved away from my running friends.

I was going to post this in the exercise topic but they don't seem to get many responses over there...

Yoga, weights, exercise bike, treadmill (watching netflix Grin ) - all at home in the late evening, as I'm a single mum with v little time/spare money.

There's always a way!

pontiouspilates · 12/03/2019 08:01

Weekly pilates class, weekly long walk and running x3 per week.

Devondreaming · 12/03/2019 08:35

OK. So all of you who go to the gym every day, or nearly every day, or do classes 5-7 times a week etc. How old are your kids and do you work? I have four kids 6-12 and I work 3x 10 hour shifts each week. I do my 2 yoga classes on the two week days that I don’t work when the kids are at school. I just can’t fathom how people fit all this exercise into their lives.

My DC’s are at Uni but I’ve followed the same exercise routine for about 20years.i do my classes and PT’s sessions at 6am before the family were awake. Home in time for breakfast and get ready for work. DH did the morning nursery/school run and I collected them from after school club.

VenetiaHall · 12/03/2019 09:02

Holy crap. If I can shower 3 times a week I feel on top of the world Blush I seriously need to up my game!

I have two little ones and struggling to do anything really. Manage one Pilates class a week at the moment which is late, after they are in bed, if my husband gets home from work Hmm I have nerve damage from my births and the Pilates is wonderful for that.

I'm trying to walk more during the day but it's been freezing and pissing down this last week so I've not bothered Blush Have at least a stone/a dress size to lose and completely not managing at all, now I realise why!

Shodan · 12/03/2019 09:18

Karate Grin At least twice a week, more if I can manage it.

The great thing about it (apart from the beneficial exercise, obviously) is that it's very sociable. After 16 of training they are like my family. So any time that I feel tired and not inclined to exercise, I go anyway, just to see them, and of course then have to do the exercising bit.

I've also just started accompanying ds1 on his runs, although I go on my bike, because I'm shit at running.

Other than that, I have a selection of dvds/apps that I do- all different things, because boredom with one type hits very early.

babysharkah · 12/03/2019 12:35

Weight training. I love it.

goingonabearhunt1 · 12/03/2019 13:14

I'm always amazed on these threads at all the ppl that get up at the crack of dawn to go to the gym every day. I go to spin once a week after work and according to my faux bit walk on average 4-5 miles a day (don't drive). I've also just started swimming once a week on my lunch break. Sometimes I do yoga, either at home or a class. I'm really not a morning person and can't imagine anything worse than getting up at 5am to go to the gym but impressed at those of you who do Grin

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/03/2019 14:19

@devondreaming my dc are grownup. I work full time. But go to the gym straight from work most evenings and don't get home until anywhere between 8pm and 10pm. My friends are all at the gym so we hang out in the bar after classes.

Weekends I'm there at 9am and often stop for lunch with friends after class.

I don't watch tv, I don't read books and I don't do much housework! Life is work and gym (and coffee). Grin

SurgeHopper · 12/03/2019 14:37

I have 2 kids, a full time job and a long commute, hence the lack of exercise.

I try and run around the park at weekends with the kids. Not literally running. Just mooning around with them etc.

WhoWasIt · 12/03/2019 15:16

I excercise my legs by walking to the fridge and back, i then excercise my arms by lifting the goodies to my mouth.

TheDogsMother · 12/03/2019 15:22

Walk the dog for an hours a day. Jillian Michaels 30 minute workouts at home 5-6 days per week, either HIIT or weights.

areyoubeingserviced · 12/03/2019 15:23

I do Thai boxing twice a week
Bootcamp on Sunday
Spin twice a week
Callentics at home
Weights after the spin class twice a week

DarlingNikita · 12/03/2019 15:54

I'm lucky in that I work for myself, so can (in theory) go to the gym during the day, when my favourite classes are on, and work a bit later into the evening (DP and I don't have kids).

I get up at 7.30 most weekdays to do yoga in the living room. It's a drag sometimes, and I do ask myself why I get up with an alarm when I work for myself and no one need know if I stay in bed til noon, but I never regret it.

spinyffud · 12/03/2019 17:44

I do crossfit 6 times per week. I absolutely love it. I am 41 and didn't exercise until mid 30s. I have met so many fabulous people through crossfit and everyday the routine is different and challenging. I absolutely love it (I am not very good at it, but still adore it)

MrsJBaptiste · 12/03/2019 18:22

My kids are older (12 & 14) and can be left now so it makes everything so much easier.

I either go to the gym before work if DH is off (shift worker) or straight after. I also get up at 7am on Saturday and Sunday to be in the gym when it opens. Is that sad? 😊

However I also work part time, 4 days a week and finish at 3.30 so can go on my way home and still be home for 6pm and have my evening.

myidentitymycrisis · 12/03/2019 18:42

I started on couch to 5k in August. I now run for 30 mins every other day, I'm not very fast so that's just under 5k.

I used to swim a mile 3 times a week for years, but running has helped me to be more toned.

I'm early 50's a consistent size 10, 5'7' and weigh between 9 and 9 stone 3.

I eat lots of fruit and veg and mostly chicken and fish, but have chocolate and wine as well.

myidentitymycrisis · 12/03/2019 18:44

and I also walk briskly for 40 minutes on 3 or 4 days a week.

EEELA · 13/03/2019 12:18

Wow I wasn't expecting so many responses. Thank you! So many great ideas.

CrossFit is something I've been considering for a while but it seems a bit intimidating - I suppose it would depend on the group, though. And I love swimming but live fairly rurally and the only swimming poor nearby is outside! Might be one for the summer though.

@DarlingNikita - I work for myself too so "in theory" can be very flexible with classes etc - don't know why I'm finding it so hard to actually do!

OP posts:
MistressDeeCee · 13/03/2019 12:22

Weights and mini trampoline at home. I also try to go for a brisk walk most days, say 30 minutes in total. & that's it.

DarlingNikita · 13/03/2019 12:28

OP, for me it was as simple (but I'm not saying it was easy) as getting into the habit. Now I feel weird if I DON'T go.

EffYouSeeKaye · 13/03/2019 14:07

I think this thread has become the exercise equivalent of those threads in the education topics where the op asks ‘what reading level are your reception / year 1 children?’ and all the mums rock up saying stuff like ‘level 9’, ‘gold band’ and ‘oh, they just finished Dickens and now moving on to Chaucer’ etc etc Grin

MinesaPinot · 13/03/2019 14:11

Zumba, yoga and ballet.

I know I've got a bit to lose and probably should do more, but I can do these in venues close to where I live so its easy to build up a regular pattern. I joined a gym near work, but just never got there so was a pointless waste of money.

honeylane · 13/03/2019 14:21

Body pump twice a week and lots of walking (have dogs)

DarlingNikita · 14/03/2019 10:53

That's not very fair, EffYouSeeKaye. There's lots of types and levels of exercise represented on here.
