What kind of exercise do you do?

EEELA · 11/03/2019 12:49

What kind of exercise or which sports do you do? And how often?

Mainly asking if you're of a relatively 'normal' weight and not trying to lose lots of weight/aren't training for something very intense/etc.

I want to find a sport or exercise that I enjoy. I'm a bit overweight but not massively (know that it will reduce once I actually start moving...). I used to run but found it pretty boring alone and have moved away from my running friends.

I was going to post this in the exercise topic but they don't seem to get many responses over there...

Pilates x 2
RPM x 2
TRX x 1
Weights and cardio x 2

I love the gym; keeps my mind and body sharp.

MrsJBaptiste · 11/03/2019 21:07

I go to the gym 5 times a week, for 1.5 hours a time and do 40 mins cardio, 30 mins weights and 10 mins abs. I generally burn 1000 calories in each cardio session and follow a low carb diet so this helps keep my weight down. I'm 5' 10" and weigh 70kg if that helps!

Fluffypot333 · 11/03/2019 21:25

Brisk hill walking four times a week and weights for toning arms and shoulders.

I weigh 16 stone. I run 3 miles three times a week and walk 3 miles on the others. I did red January and am now doing march on cancer 10,000 steps a day for cancer research. I am quite fit for an overweight person!

SurgeHopper · 12/03/2019 00:36

Nothing at the minute.

Will start cycling again once the snow melts.

I'm a healthy weight and just eat less to stay slim, rather than caning it in the gym.

Cuch · 12/03/2019 02:35

Gym 4 times per week which usually involves running 5K fast or hill sprints, some other form of cardio, then weights and resistance work. I prefer running outside but find that I injure myself less at the gym.

5’5”, 10lbs overweight but maintain a fairly trim size 10-12 through exercise (someone will be along in a minute to express disbelief that size 10 jeans fit me when I weigh 11 and a half stone, but they do, and with no overhang too. I think exercise kind of keeps me lean or something. I don’t look overweight).

Barbarafromblackpool · 12/03/2019 06:50

When do people find time to go to the gym four times a.week? Do people work part time? Not being facetious.

DonnaDarko · 12/03/2019 06:54

Admittedly, I am trying to lose weight, but that's because I have not done exercise properly since DS was born over 2 years ago!

Before I was pregnant I was doing yoga 2-3 times a week plus a couple of popsugar fitness or fitness blender videos on YouTube.

I am starting it all again from this week, just need to keep motivated!

I am currently a size 12-14. Used to be 8-10 pre DS.

Cuch · 12/03/2019 07:01

barbarafromblackpool I have a part time job and when I’m not there I work from home doing something else so when I’m not physically at work I can choose my own hours. Im also a single parent and my ex has our kids most weekends so I can go to the gym then if I like too. However, when I used to work full time and lived with my ex I used to get up at 5.15 to get to the gym when it opened at 6, worked out for an hour then came home and showered and got ready for work (left the house at 8.15).

Devondreaming · 12/03/2019 07:03

This thread can not be representative of exercise my mums. I thought I was doing quite a bit but I feel like a sloth reading this.

I do pilates at home for 15 mins each morning just to maintain core strength as I have a terrible back and can’t risk letting the core strength slip.

I try and ensure I do 10,000 steps a day walking.

I do 2 power yoga classes a week.

Fazackerley · 12/03/2019 07:04

It is absolutely not representative.

Barbarafromblackpool · 12/03/2019 07:13

Oh good, I was feeling terrible! I have a five month old baby, a pre-schooler and a child at primary school, so not the easiest set up currently, but couldn't see how I'd fit much in when I was at work either. Would love to get down the gym.

Nacreous · 12/03/2019 07:16

I try to swim once or twice a week, but one of those is usually a fairly big swim (1-2hours), and then try and do yoga or pilates 1-2 times a week, and then I also am lucky enough to walk to work, so that is about an extra hour a day. I then try to do just 10 mins of yoga/pilates/body weight exercises at home but I definitely don't manage it every day. Overall it probably works out at 3 things a week, but yoga and Pilates are not high intensity at all.

This is a fairly major change for me, as I wasn't doing anything for years before that. However, I was slowly gaining more and more weight, and losing more and more fitness so I knew something had to give. I had got to 19lb into the overweight category for BMI. I signed myself up for a long swim to give myself something I had to train for. I've lost 8lb so far, in just over 2 months, though I'm mainly aiming to increase my strength and fitness for now, so not really dieting. I've also got much slimmer and stronger.

Cuch · 12/03/2019 07:17

barbarafromblackpool when my kids were babies and toddlers I did fuck all. I was too busy weeping in a corner from exhaustion. You are doing just fine! Flowers

Upthepong · 12/03/2019 07:17

Not enough! I try and bike the kids to school and back but am averaging 2 days a week because of the pissy weather (it can be very windy). So that's 20 mins each way, so total of 2 hours 40 cycling. I also try to get out walking of a weekend.

Lozzy25 · 12/03/2019 07:20

I walk my dogs for about 1.5 hours a day through the countryside so quite uneven ground, hills etc. I am 5ft 6 and weigh 9 stone exactly. I eat healthily but do love chocolate!

countdowntonap · 12/03/2019 07:25

Running club once a week
Yoga 7 times a week (mix of power, Acro and vinyasa)
Ad-hoc weights and self yoga practice
Spin 4-5 times a week - spin is the one that makes a difference! I struggle to keep weight on when consistently doing 5 classes a week.

Barbarafromblackpool · 12/03/2019 07:33

Thanks Cuch.

SherlockSays · 12/03/2019 07:37

Walking the dogs and I've recently started going back to the gym after pregnancy where I do mainly weight based exercise and a little cardio.

I used to go to CrossFit and loved it, I was so strong then.

LowLifeOpinions · 12/03/2019 07:47

I don't work and am recovering from years of illness. I LOVE hearing about all your activity. I have joined a gym and am trying to be active most days, weights or cardio (treadmill or cross trainer mostly). Obviously there are plenty of days when I can't get exercising for some reason but I try to just get back to it as soon as I can.

For me key secret were to

a) decide I really had to commit to fitness, not think of it in terms of one or two classes a week

b) educate myself more about weight training as it is so important

c) get a notebook to plan workouts and record what I do. Digital trackers don't get into my brain the same way.

2cats2many · 12/03/2019 07:51

Dog walk every day. Usually between 3 and 5km briskly.

Two runs a week, between 5 and 7km each.

Cycle to work and back every day- around 10km per day.

And I still have to watch what I eat.

I have friends who do Cross fit. It looks like it can get a bit obsessive.

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/03/2019 07:51

Gym 7 days a week.

4x bodypump classes.
1x bodybalance
2x spin classes.
1x running class.

Bit of free weights and cross trainer mixed in.

Bike 14 miles a day for my commute as long as the wind is less than 20mph. So not today!

I'm technically overweight but I'm fairly happy with how I look. Maybe could do with shredding 7lbs.

maxinespalour · 12/03/2019 07:52

I'm 5ft 4 weigh 8 1/2 st and the only exercise I do is walking and housework!
I don't drive so walk to work, the shops etc I'm also incredibly tidy, so on my days off I never sit still.
Probably need to do something that gets my heart going or does sex count? Grin

LoubyLou1234 · 12/03/2019 07:57

I can't run. I love swimming but my body got used to it and was ready for a change so I mixed it up. I'm currently doing body combat, spin ( sprint and rpm) I also do yoga and I've started to use resistance bands too. I do it all at home as my shift work and classes nearby aren't great. I also do a lot of walking in work and go for walks when weather allows.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 12/03/2019 07:58

I try and walk briskly for at least 4 miles a day, usually cover 17,000 steps per day
