So talk to me about Sky TV

I am putting my foot down with DH about the absolutely ridiculous amount we pay to Sky every month.

£38.99 for phone line rental and broadband ( fibre). This cannot be got any cheaper ( according to Dh) as we have to have a phone line in order to have broadband and we pay more for fibre as the speed is so much quicker. Apparently Virgin would be cheaper but they do not cover our area.

£22 for sky tv. This is for the basic package, no films, sports, kids programmes etc.

£22.50 for SIM cards for mobiles ( 3 mobiles, unlimited texts and calls.) I can't remember how much data we get, but the handy thing is we can transfer data between each other if one of us is getting short.

I now scarcely watch any Sky channels, just watch Netflix all the time and would just get rid of Sky if it were up to me. But DH informs me if we got rid of Sky I would not be able to record anything anymore and that the mobile phone bill would go up as we get them cheaper due to having
Sky tv.

Therefore nearly £1000 annually for media. There must be another option. Someone please help me out here!

TalkTalk have a deal on right now that you get Fast Broadband + TalkTalk TV + Free TV Box + Entertainment Boost for £33.95 per month. it might also be worth you looking for a new sim plan at somewhere like TESCO as you may get something cheaper x

(the talktalk deal also includes line rental)

georgedawes · 10/03/2019 20:27

freeview recorder?

georgedawes · 10/03/2019 20:28

I pay £7.50 per month to plusnet for a good sim only deal

UrsulaPandress · 10/03/2019 20:29

We pay £82 per month just for Sky tv. Dh occasionally phones them threatening to cancel and they drop the price for a month or two then it creeps back up. I could quite happily live without it.

We got rid of Sky which was costing £30+ per month and now have Now TV at £7. You can’t record but you get used to the way it works.

I got rid of Sky and replaced it with Netflix. I keep getting emails from Sky offering the basic package for £11 a month.

I try to minimise our Murdoch exposure, so don't have Sky. Not sure we spend £1000 a year on media. Will see.

Netflix monthly subscription £7.99 a month
Plusnet broadband plus phone about £34 a month
Three x mobile phones £35 a month
Tv licence fee about £12 a month

I think! Which is embarrassingly more than £1k. Wow. Didn't realise we spent that much.

anniehm · 10/03/2019 20:50

I've got rid of sky sports and movies but the basic package, phone and fibre is fine must get rid of anytime calls though as I can use my mobile minutes. I keep it mostly for greys anatomy and my DD's watch various other American crap.

anniehm · 10/03/2019 20:51

Ps use giffgaff for mobiles, hassle free

MaHeidsGouping · 10/03/2019 20:54

You can cancel Sky tv but keep the record/pause etc function. I used to pay £10 a month...it might have gone up slightly by now.

We switched from Sky to NowTV last year (TV, phone, and broadband). It's a lot cheaper and we now have access to loads of movies, which we didn't before as the movie package was too expensive. There are some differences in channels (so DH tells me!), but none that affect what we watch.
We used some of the savings on a box to record programmes, which we missed not having, and a Netflix subscription.
