Most cringe coffee with friend

Met up with a friend from work for a coffee to celebrate my promotion but I'm still cringing out after the meet up and don't think I'll meet up with him again. He has always been a little odd and socially awkward but otherwise a nice person.

But anyway, to start with the waitress forgot to bring our cakes, and he asked her quite bluntly "are you bringing our cakes or not?" When she said "they forgot them, sorry", he said "did they forget them or did you?". I could actually have died!

Then later on he asked to see a pic of my DS as couldn't remember what he looked like, I said I just needed to find a decent one, he then said "I've got to make sure you only see the decent pictures on my phone" as he showed me pictures from his birthday and I laughed "oh so you've got lots of indecent images on your phone then". Then he said "since you said you've got to find a decent picture of your DS that suggests you have lots of indecent pictures on your phone, and leads me to think you have child potnography on your phone!" Now he was giggling as he said this and clearly it was just a tasteless continuation of the joke but it wasn't funny at all and I was absolutely humiliated, I mean the last thing I want is for all the people in the crowded cafe to think I'm a fucking paedo ffs!

Then after an hour I made excuses to leave and said we better get the bill, to which he said "are you paying this time". I assumed we would split the bill and although it was s tenner I found this quite rude! So I'm quite disgruntled and embarrassed following this meet up. Safe to say I won't be meeting up with him for a coffee again! Not sure why I'm posting really, just had to tell someone because the whole thing is making me cringe! Don't get me wrong we did have a good chat generally, but those three things really put a dampener on a good chin wag!!!

He just sounds rude.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/03/2019 19:24

Who suggested the coffee to begin with?
I would have died!

Teaandcrisps · 09/03/2019 19:26

What an wierdoarse stay well clear

SausageSimon · 09/03/2019 19:30

Ah, what a shame! Had it been a long friendship?

It's awful when you know you're not going to see someone again! I had to do it once, I met a friend for a drink and a cake like you. She's lovely but quite a competitive person, she's always wanting to be the best for some reason. Like at college she was always desperate to do better than me and another friend.

Anyway, she started banging on about cross fit and how "inspiring it is to be around people who eat well" etc. It was some wanky mega patronising speech about how amazing her new fitness life is and I just knew that I wouldn't bother again Grin

When did the word “cringe” become a noun?

FamilyOfAliens · 09/03/2019 19:32

Sorry, adjective Blush

SrSteveOskowski · 09/03/2019 19:34

He sounds like a complete knob.

icarriedaturnip · 09/03/2019 19:34

I would have absolutely died

VioletCharlotte · 09/03/2019 19:50

God this sounds exactly like someone I know (an ex!) Reading it made me cringe.

RunSweatLaughAndLatte · 09/03/2019 19:51

He suggested the coffee.

I did indeed die. DP asked if I had a nice time when I got in and I was too embarrassed to admit how fucking awful and himiliating it was so bad to post on here Blush

To be fair, he sounds like a total odd ball and you a drama queen.

But it seems there is others like you sigh.

ambereeree · 09/03/2019 20:27

I have a colleague like this. I wonder if it's the same person. Feel for you OP.

Jellyonawonkyplate · 09/03/2019 20:33

You both sound a bit odd, tbh. And why can't you laugh about this with your DH?

TheFormidableMrsC · 09/03/2019 20:37

He sounds massively socially awkward and possibly on the spectrum...DS is like this (not along the same lines as only 8 and is autistic) and will come out with what appears to be the most spectacularly blunt comments at the most inappropriate times. It is frequently mortifying but can't be helped (currently). You've got it out of your system, you won't make that mistake again, just know he's a bit odd.
