Easy Impressive Cakes for cake sale?

N0tfinished · 09/03/2019 10:29

I'm not a great baker, and have been manipulated by MIL into running a cake sale. Her usual modus operandi- she volunteers to do something then gets 'so tired' and suddenly I'm doing some pointless busy work & she gets credit. She is crazy skilled at it.

What are your fail-safe recipes? I want minimum effort, maximum reward!!

Thanks xxx

What is the target audience? Children just want something on the top. Like smarties. That is their entire rationale. So cupcakes with smarties on sell fast.

If you need to do a big cake rather than cupcakes, decorate it entirely with maltteasers

Rainbow cupcakes are easy. Make or buy plain cupcakes/fairy cakes and put a line of red, yellow, blue and purple icing alongside each other on a bit of cling film. Fold it over into a tube. Shove it in a piping bag and boom rainbow icing. Easy peasy and looks amazing

For kids: giant marshmallows dipped in melted chocolate and sprinkles. Krispie cakes with sprinkles. Fairy cakes with sprinkles.

Adults: get thee over to the protestant traybake thread Grin

Delia's Family Cake is easy and I have found that it always sells well.

I would suggest you get over to the Protestant traybake thread and have your eyes opened!

Masses of recipes there for no-bake cakes with maximum reward.

Plus an insight to a culture those of us outside NI had no idea existed.

You definitely need to visit the traybakes thread as mentioned above!
Stick to individual buns or cupcakes, or loaf cakes, rather than large round cakes that are a pain to slice.
If children are involved a tray or two of iced donuts would be helpful too.

Thanks all! Traybakes & rocky road sound do-able. Thank you all!!

I've found that going to town on easy decorating is a crowd pleaser and looks impressive - bought frosting spread around the sides and top of a sandwich cake then put Cadbury Fingers standing upright around the sides, Maltesers or bought chocolate curls on top. You can vary it and sandwich plain Victoria sponge with lemon curd, vanilla frosting and white chocolate fingers.
