Someone knocked on my front door very loudly about 6 minutes ago

what do I do?

About 10 minutes ago someone knocked at the front door with the letter box quite loudly. I didn’t go to look or open the front door as I was too scared, but have put lights on inside the house so they know people are in.

Look out of a window and see if you can see someone.

If not, just carry on with what you were doing.

ineedaknittedhat · 09/03/2019 00:54

Probably a food delivery to the wrong house.

landregistry · 09/03/2019 00:58

We’d all been in bed for ages so it feels like the middle of the night - and I was too scared to go and look - it was 12.38 am when it happened.

I haven’t heard anything else since.

I am the only adult here - 3 dc all sleeping.

Do you have any particular reason for specific concerns? I mean an abusive ex or anything? If so, just your letter-box, make sure all is locked up and try to settle back to sleep if you can

Smotheroffive · 09/03/2019 01:03

There's always the possibility its some tipsy Friday partyer thinking he's knocking on the door of someone he met and has got mixed up, and moved on.

origamiunicorn · 09/03/2019 01:04

This happened to me OP. I was in the house on my own as DP was away with work and at 11pm there was a loud knock at the door. The lights were already on as I was in the living room watching TV but the concerning thing was, minutes after the knocking stopped, they tried the handle. Could be nothing but please make sure your doors are locked. Sorry OP I don't want to scare you just want you to be safe. Ask your neighbours tomorrow if they had a knock. When I got the courage to look through an upstairs window a man with a backpack on was walking away from the house.

DangerMouse17 · 09/03/2019 01:07

Well you were better off looking! At least you could have put your mind at rest. It's probably just someone at the wrong house...then they realised and moved on. Leave some lights on and go back to sleep.

JaneKay · 09/03/2019 01:07

Just make sure everywhere is locked up, doors and all windows (up and down).

DangerMouse17 · 09/03/2019 01:09

And yes make sure all doors, Windows locked securely. Maybe put a tv on for a while?

SurgeHopper · 09/03/2019 01:09

Could be loads of things :

Drunk kids walking past
Takeaway wrongly delivered
Taxi at wrong house

landregistry · 09/03/2019 01:10

I haven’t heard any other noises and almost 30 minutes have gone by.

I do have an ex but he wouldn’t do this.

I had no idea I was such a wuss. Well I did actually, but it’s a long time since anything like this has happened.

The front door was locked when I came to bed but I wouldn’t say the security on this house was great.

We've had this a few times.
Usually taxi drivers get our house mixed up with next door.
Once though we had an old guy who thought our house was his. He tried the key in the lock and then tried to get in the window. Hubby was asleep in bed and I was in front room watching TV. I woke hubby who initially confronted him (he was still in our front garden) but it didn't take long to see the man was very confused and incoherent. Turns out he lived about 10 mins walk away so my husband walked him home and found his carer had frantically been looking for him.
I hope yours was just a mix up with the house number.

Jasharps · 09/03/2019 01:16

We had this once. Taxi at wrong door. About the same time as now.

Drogosnextwife · 09/03/2019 01:17

Have you got anyone you can phone? I know it's late.

landregistry · 09/03/2019 01:17

If it was a mix up though they might have tried more than the once?

I was thinking it could be someone trying to find out if the house is empty. No response to their knock, and they can then get on with trying to break in. Which is why I put the lights on.

Ex and I are completely estranged sadly, but I wish he were here Sad.

I was going to phone my neighbour but it would have woken her up, and it’s now 40 minutes since it happened.

I'd try and get some sleep, landregistry. At least have a brew and try and relax a bit?

Maybe go to b and q tomorrow for some dead bolts etc for the door's if it'd make you feel better?

SurgeHopper · 09/03/2019 01:21

If it was a mix up though they might have tried more than the once?

^^

Not really. They probably can't be arsed either tbh

EnidButton · 09/03/2019 01:24

Taxi or takeaway. They wouldn't bother knocking twice if it was obvious no-one was looking out for them. Then they prob realised it was the wrong address.

Or drunk person thinking it was their mates house. Mate calls or texts them right after they knock to ask where tf they are.

It would make my heart beat faster and worry me a bit too but rationally it's fine and just a mistake or someone who'll have an epic hangover tomorrow. Put a light on downstairs. Flowers

PicklePumpkinPie · 09/03/2019 01:24

I've got to the stage that I don't open it as it was happening a lot. A taxi driver would normally just knock the once.

Teaandcrisps · 09/03/2019 01:25

Good idea about the lights. How is everything now? I left the heating on so woke up about 10mins ago really hot!

landregistry · 09/03/2019 01:28

I will try and sleep.

Thanks for all messages.

Maybe a floodlight that comes on if someone is close to the house is a good idea. On the other hand anything might set it off, scaring the life out of you for no reason.

landregistry · 09/03/2019 01:30

Missed the recent few messages.

Everything is completely silent and I have lights on.

I didn’t realise taxis and takeaways knock once.

I left the heating on so woke up about 10mins ago really hot!

I hate it when that happens - or I wonder why I am so parched in the early hours of the morning, and realise the radiators have been belting out heat (and money) all night.
