Do you feel under pressure to finish your drink quickly when you're in a busy cafe?

I've got a train to catch at 11.30, had a bit of spare time after dropping off DD at school so I've popped into a cafe for a coffee.

I've finished my coffee, the cafe is busy and there aren't many spare seats. I was planning on staying for half an hour and reading my book but I'm feeling under pressure now to leave and free up the table for someone else. I'll probably end up wandering round the shops slowly for a while.

What does everyone else do? Do you leave as soon as you've finished when the cafe is busy or do you take your time?

No way. Why should I leave quickly? There are lots of people I see having meetings or working nursing a solitary one or two cups of coffee.

You've paid for coffee so stay. If you do feel uncomfy get a free glass of water or another coffee.

I feel awkward sometimes especially when ive managed to get a decent seat but headphones are in ive been known to watch a whole movie downloaded on netflix with a large costa before!

Nope. Why are they more important than you? For all you know, the person you give up your seat to may buy one small coffee and stay there for two hours anyway.

I wouldn't rush finishing my coffee, but I probably wouldn't stay for a long time after I'd finished if there were lots of people looking for a seat, especially not to watch a whole movie!

This. If I want a long sit and a read, I order a second coffee.

Fine to take your time drinking your coffee, but it’s not fair on the café owners or customers to stay afterwards if no free tables.

MadameDD · 08/03/2019 10:45

It's only an hour or so after your original coffee so for me unless funds are really tight I'd just buy another coffee - then guilt allayed!

Fine to stay if no one's looking for a seat, but if it's busy and people are walking around with trays of food and drink and you've finished, then I guess it's good manners and thoughtful to leave. Not that you have to, but if you were the one looking for a seat you'd probably hope those who had finished would give you theirs.
