Likely demise of Crabtree and Evelyn

I was reading on the nice things you buy yourself thread and a poster wrote about their local Crabtree and Evelyn being a bit sparse on stock. If Wikipedia is correct it looks like closing down

Oh that's a shame. Mind you I suspect because I am one of those "Oh I used to go there" type people. Haven't been there in years but I really loved the Summer Hill and Nantucket Briar fragrances and some of the soaps.

Are any shops going to be left standing at all I wonder?!

sueelleker · 08/03/2019 14:27

Oh no!!! I adore their hand creams-such a wonderful range of fragrances. (And they absorb beautifully as well)

BlueMerchant · 08/03/2019 14:28

I find them a bit dated if I'm honest.

Yes! They're the best hand creams anywhere!

Sorry that was a bit excitable Grin I think some panic buying online is in order.

Years ago, they did beautiful glycerine soaps which were like jewels & smelled heavenly. They stopped those & jow I find the range rather limited. Their gardeners hand cream is really good though. Will be a shame if they go under.

Our local one went ages ago - friend got made redundant :( I thought the whole company had gone a while ago.

I visited the York branch a couple of weeks ago who confirmed they are closing all physical shops.

Should have known when their products started popping up in TK MAXX - never a good sign.

Very sad - my first job was as a sales assistant in C&E, and I've remained a fan since.

I'm probably in the minority(!) but I did hugely prefer the traditional apothecary vibe they previously had, rather than their more recent geometric/simple branding.

Big shame Sad

Fooferella · 08/03/2019 15:18

I walked past the one in the centre of town the other day and was totally surprised that it was still there. Every time I've walked past it for the past 10 years there has never been any one in there.
My mum loves C&E and my Grandma always went there to get 'naice' gifts. I think it's become rather irrelevant for the majority of people under 80 though.
It's sad that so many people will be losing jobs.

Oh I liked their old glycerine soaps too, in the 80s/90s.

I’ve only bought the avocado and basil bar soap from them in recent years, but I do really love it and am stocking up like mad now. Have used it since I was really young, so it feels like the end of an era. I might just keep one forever and sniff it periodically Sad

I remember them - and there lies the problem.
