Why does Eastenders and Corrie start at half seven?

Ok, this is slightly a rhetorical question, but I remember growing up, Eastenders and Corrie were shows that you watched (we were an Eastenders house) after you'd had your tea or dinner, and by that point, the evening had started. To me it suggests that for most people, that's when they'd finished work and were ready to relax.

Now I'm an adult, I'm lucky if I've got home from work, had dinner, washed up by nine or half nine. Then it's almost bed time. Anyone notice that their evening is taken up by adult stuff, or is it normal to be finished and sitting down at 7.30? When are you ready to relax of an evening?

When the kids were young we would sit down at 930ppm and sigh, ' rest of the day is our own!' Now we can be done for.6.00pm.

Because if they started earlier they might crash into the end of Crossroads or Triangle or Eldorado.

I miss Kate O'Mara though. Sad

Because it's prime time and most people can watch it at this time. It didn't used to be on all the time like now where there are different channels to watch them later or several at once at the weekend. There were no repeats.
It's always been 7.30 though and around the 90's they started after watershed episodes unsuitable for children.

we We’re always done by 7 as kids but when I was in primary my mum worked at home so could cook tea early etc. As we got older and she worked outside the home, we made the tea so we’re still done by 7. Rarely am I done at 7!
