Fucking carpet beetles!

Just found one in my room. Angry And I can bet you there are more. I nearly went mad in the last flat I lived because they were everywhere and I could never get rid of them. Surprisingly my in-laws never seemed to get them despite never hoovering (I am not joking.) Gonna see is Sainsbo's has some sticky traps tomorrow and then I'm gonna get some spray bombs off Amazon. I don't have a lot of things they think are tasty but I'm not risking it and I hate the little buggers. Oh wait, they eat paper, scratch that, I have LOTS of things they think are tasty. Grrrr!

I see your carpet beetle and raise you bed bugs! I thought they were supposed to be too small to see but I googled and what I have looks like them anyway.

I have vacuumed and sprayed and still they come!

They were there when I moved in but I thought they were carpet beetles. There were only a few but in the hot summer we had there were quite a few. Not my pet of choice"!

Oh dear lord, I'll take carpet beetles, at least they don't suck your blood. Envy

Have either of you been bitten by carpet beetles or bed bugs.......still trying to work out what’s biting me 😳😳

Deathraystare · 07/03/2019 19:47

Ohh Yes! That is how I thought it was bed bugs! Big nasty itchy but sore lumps. When you kill them the smell is not nice at all and they have ruined my mattress (obvious signs of poo along the seams!) That is the sign you have the devils (bed bugs). Small black dots along the side of your mattress. Lovely. No wonder I sneeze so much.

gingajewel · 07/03/2019 19:52

We are covered in bites, but I’ve stripped the beds, took all the underneath off and cut a hole in the mattress and I still have no sign of them! I’m still worrying it’s bed bugs though!!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 07/03/2019 20:11

I'd never even heard of carpet beetles before reading MN.

I'm over 50 and have always had carpets in houses.

Surfskatefamily · 07/03/2019 21:02

Do you mean wood lice? Never heard of carpet beetles but woodlice march up and down my living room..little feckers

Littlefroggy18 · 07/03/2019 21:09

Another one here who’s never heard of carpet beetles! Can someone enlighten me?

BrexitIsComing · 07/03/2019 21:41

These little bastards

If anyone has any recommendations on a particularly good & effective treatment to eliminate them, I'm all ears.

OMG, the preview function is working!

I found some in my room and didn’t know what they were and we had tiny flying creatures, it wasn’t until holes appeared in the carpet in a downstairs room (I can’t believe what big holes such tiny things can create) we realised what we had. I read steaming doesn’t work but we gave it a ago and steamed the hell out of the carpet and touch wood it seemed to sort it

DaisyDreaming · 07/03/2019 21:57

Ginga/ carpet beetles don’t bite, you just get holes in your carpet and little cases of odd colour- they shed and it’s the colour of the carpet. Bedbugs are my worst pest related nightmare, I had no idea they can be clear (when not been feeding) and up to the size of a spider! Have you tried looking with a torch at the edge of carpets and edge of the mattress?

WiltedDaffs · 07/03/2019 22:19

I couldn't work out where the carpet beetles were living in my house. I hoovered everywhere and still couldn't find the buggers. All I knew was a saw more of them in the living room.

Then I started getting itchy bumps after sitting on the sofa. So I tipped the sofa upside down, there was a zip on the bottom...I undid it and Envy

gingajewel · 07/03/2019 22:33

Bed bugs are my worst nightmare too, I’m making myself so ill over it!
We have taken the mattress off and checked every seam and bit of the bed with a torch, our bed is in two pieces (divan bed) and we have taken it apart and looked at the bed base with a torch and also put a little hole in the mattress and checked in there, there is literally no sign at all of bed bugs but I’m still paranoid that is what is biting us!
I have also checked the carpet, walls, curtains and wardrobes with a torch! My bedroom is really small so I have checked everywhere and can’t find anything........!

Pet flea spray gets rid of carpet beetles/woolly bears. Get a decent one like Indorex or Acclaim and spray everything. Avoid birds and fish if you have them and small animals. Remove spiders if you are able to as they will also die and they are the goodies. You will need to spray every 6 months, as the little devils fly in from outdoors and breed.

Bag fabrics in sealable bags once you have checked there is nothing in the folds.

DontCallMeShitley · 08/03/2019 00:38

BTW they don't bite but can cause allergies while at the woolly bear stage. Can also affect pets.

Deathraystare · 08/03/2019 07:39

Hmmm. I seem to get two critters. One is brown and almost circular, slow moving (doesn't look like the carpet beetle and does look like the bed bugs so am treating as such. Another is a tiny black thing, long and thing like a tic. I think they have joined forces.

I think the lumpy bites I got last summer are an allergy to the bites. The other bites I get are like small hard pimples and once scratched (how can I not?) hurt like hell.

All is quiet on the western front at the moment but will probably spray again and vacuum at the weekend.

I know it sounds like I am the dirtiest cuss out there but I am not. Messy yes, dirty no.

Deathraystare · 08/03/2019 07:54

A friend of mine is dealing with a mass invasion of moths. She has been sorting it out for about a month now and has had people in also to deal with it. She must be really fed up by now.

Justonemorepancake · 08/03/2019 07:56

Our cats have bought fleas in and I'm bitten to shit. It's awful. Did spot on again yesterday and today I have to hoover mop and spray. Not easy to get everywhere when you have a tiny house cluttered with kids toys and my work stuff. I have about 20 itchy bites.

Deathraystare · 08/03/2019 09:16

Justonemorepancake - that is the only thing I don't miss about cats - fleas (oh and thrown up hairballs!).

bluetongue · 08/03/2019 09:25

Are carpet beetles the same as carpet moths. I have them in my house and they are evil fuckers Angry

I thought I had bed bugs a few months ago while abroad. I was horrified at the thought that I’d be investing the poor unsuspecting hotel I was staying at next. Then I did some googling and realised if I brought them back home with me they would be a nightmare to get rid of. Turns out it was an allergic reaction / hives. Probably caused by the hotel shampoo I’d be using. I’d never been so happy to have a medical condition in my life Grin

Justonemorepancake · 08/03/2019 11:43

Right, I have sprayed everywhere amd am hiding outside from the fumes and freezing my arse off. There's no way I managed to get every nook and cranny, there's just too much stuff so I guess I will spray every few weeks for a while and hope doing that is enough to break the cycle... not to mention the amound of throws, blankets, cushion covers etc I need to wash. Grr. Horrible sending my son to school with bites. I told him they were mosquito bites as I'm embarrassed he'll tell everyone we have fleas!
