I'm charged with booking somewhere for a friend's birthday. Has anyone somewhere they've been recently and would really recommend?

hotel café royal - one of the more reasonable places cost wise and an amazing experience in the Oscar wilde lounge. I've been three times here, the last being earlier this year.

plus its super close to shopping/theatres etc.

Brilliant thanks @cujo! I'll have a look.

I love the afternnon tea at St Pancras station. Its in the former ticket office. Its more understated than say the ritz or claridges and the staff were amazing. Plus you can pop to the station champagne bar afterwards and watch the people heading off on eurostar. I love a bit of people watching.

Harrods do a wonderful afternoon tea. You can also look at the ritz and Searcy's. Searcy's have different locations across London so may have somewhere easy for you all to travel to

I think the Ritz is great - a real 'occasion'.

Also the Sanderson do an Alice in Wonderland afternoon tea, which I'm told is (was?) very good.

Zetter town house in Clerkenwell is lovely. Much smaller and lower key than the larger hotels. (less glam but still lovely imo).
