How to respond when date tells me about his DS born with Brain Injury

So I have a date on Friday ,been chatting online for ages etc seems like a lovely bloke.
It was mentioned quite early on that his DS was born with a brain injury (did not go into detail) . As his DS is obviously a significant part of his life the subject of DC /life history is very likely come up this evening .

I don't want to sound 'nosy' and ask too much detail (as its a first date) but neither do I want to sound 'flippant' and dismissive of his DS. 'Sorry' just sounds wrong please can anybody help me with an appropriate response that acknowledges his situation without getting too 'deep'.

"How do you feel about it?"

I’d ask how does he cope, how does it affect his life, how does he feel etc.

It’s a difficult one as yes it’s a first date but you’ve been talking online for a while so it’s not like you’re going in cold.

I think if you say something really open-ended along the lines of “he’s clearly a really important part of your life” gives him the opportunity to open up or not talk as he feels comfortable.

I would say “so tell me about your boy!” and I’m sure he will go into whatever level of detail he is comfortable with.

“What does he enjoy doing?”

Be guided by him but ask the normal questions you would ask-what do they like, where do they go to school, what do you do together. Although he has a brain injury he is also just a son/child.

Thank You so much ...

I knew I could rely on 'you lot' to come up with the right words !
