Do I really need contraception at my age?

I'm 51- in a newish relationship after years of being single. I had the mirena fitted a month ago and have bled continuously every day since. I am getting to the point where I want it taken out.
Before the mirena I still had periods every month but surely at my age - in reality-nothing's going to stick anyway?

my periods have always been light too.

I'm 36 and have never got on with progesterone only contraception. I would bleed constantly, it was so annoying, I tried the mini pill, the coil and the injection and it was always the same. The combined pill didn't make me bleed but made me very angry and they won't let me have it now because I'm a big fat fatty. We just use condoms. I don't like them if I'm honest but I'd rather that than another pregnancy. DH is getting the snip later on this year.

DeadButDelicious · 07/03/2019 15:49

There have been no blood free days. My womb aches and I feel emotionally shattered.

I swear I could feel the coil just sitting there when I had mine. I was so relieved to have it removed I can't tell you.

The only thing I would even consider now is the non hormonal copper coil. Which I was going to try if DH got turned down for the snip. Fortunately he didn't so it's just a waiting game now.

I am eternally grateful to the female drs at my surgery who have been so bloody brilliant. The one I cried down the phone at today just told me to come in immediately and get it taken out. She was more than happy to suggest I was one of those women from whom it doesn't work rather than trying to get me to stick it out.
I would have pulled the bloody thing out myself if she had.
Me and progesterone don't get on - at all.

Thank you all for posting on here. It has kept me sane, especially this afternoon when I am really weepy and in pain.

My hairdresser thought she was going through the menopause at 49. She now has a little girl who is 4m, a son at 14, a son at 23 and a granddaughter who is 3!

Hope it goes well Flowers

If I bleed a lot afterwards then at least I have the pills they gave me to stop the bleeding on the mirena!!
Thank you ladies- you have been life savers this afternoon. I don't remember feeling this low for a long long time. Sad
off to DR in a sec. Will report back later x

Hope it goes well. Apparently Mirena's a disaster for about 15% of users and doesn't improve and it's usually apparent early on. At least, that's what I was told when I got my first one (I'm on my 2nd and due a 3rd later this year) but I was lucky. I'm 48 and hoping this next one is as good because it's been bliss having no periods.

PiebaldHamster · 07/03/2019 17:33

I'm overdue a cervical screening Blush by about 6 months but I'm going to ask if I can have my old Mirena removed and a new one put in at the same time because the Mirena is due to be replaced in about 5 months, anyway. Here's hoping!

BigButtons · 07/03/2019 17:56

Nightmare- dr could find the thread- she thinks the whole thing has moved hence the bleeding getting worse. Have been referred for an emergency scan where they see where it is and get the bloody thing out ☹️

PiebaldHamster · 07/03/2019 19:28

Oh, no! If you're flooding, I hope you get seen soon. It can perforate the uterus. Sad

BigButtons · 07/03/2019 19:48

I'm not really flooding- but really properly bright red bleeding. Mind you she did spend quite a lot of time rummaging around in my nethers.
Have been prescribed a strong dose of Norethisterone to stanch the blood loss.
I am hoping that if it had actually perforated something I would be in a real lot of pain and would actually be bleeding really profusely.
The chances are it is still where it is supposed to be but that the threads have gone back up inside. ( desperate)

Very interesting thread ladies, am 46 and have been contraceptive free for 3 years.. but we would happily welcome another pitter patter of feet so am not too worried..

Lisette1940 · 07/03/2019 21:47

BigButtons 💐🍷what rotten luck

BigButtons · 08/03/2019 08:34

I have only taken 2 doses of the norethisterone but already the bleeding has virtually stopped.
I am wondering if I take cerazette and keep the mirena in it will also stop the bleeding?
Partner is -sensibly- talking about using condoms instead, but I hate them and would rather try and find a way to get this to work. I can cope with it if there's no bleeding.

Well, I'm still shockingly regular with periods at 51, and my Dr warned me at my last smear test in December that being gung ho with contraception even at my age could lead to unwanted results. Women are more healthy these days, although obviously that doesn't always compute to fertility.

But my DC is at uni with a friend whose mum had her naturally at the age of 52... so it really can happen (and that was 20 years ago!).

BigButtons · 08/03/2019 18:03

This is it MrsFrankDrebin I'm sure it's the same with me.

Went to A&E today- they couldn't find it either so I have to go back on Monday for a scan. Sad
