I’ve had a cough and cold since December 5th. It’s just ramped up again and I can’t sleep because of this bastard cough! I’ve tried the usual cough syrup drinks etc, lemsip night nurse, decongestant but nothing is working. Any ideas for a cure that works?

Dark chocolate is a natural antitussive
(If you’ve been coughing for three months you need to get checked)

Depends on the type of cough.
If it's a dry scratchy cough in your throat, then lemon and honey in hot water helps.
If you're coughing up phlegm, then sitting in the bathroom with the hot shower pouring will help (or using a humidifier).
But if the cough has been around for 3 months you should see a dr.
I tend to get coughs that linger after a cold due to asthma, and it's worse in cold weather. The only thing that helps is my salbutamol inhaler (Ventolin or Asmol are the australian brand names).

Coughs are caused by virus, so nothing will "cure" it.

You get buy things to soothe your chest , but generally keeping your fluids up is just as effective. ( healthcare practitioner).

Thanks- I’ve got a gp phone consultation tomorrow so I’ll mention it. I know it’s been that long, the cold keeps coming and going every few days but the cough stays. I didn’t know that @IfOnly but makes sense!

It’s not one sort of cough or another, really tickly constant and annoying when upright, chesty when trying to sleep. I’ve had a rubbish few months to be honest, figured it was my body dealing with it all. Thanks for your replies Smile

Try and minimize the irritation by keeping your throat wet (sipping a drink, sucking a sweet or lining your throat with honey).
While the cough is caused by a virus, the irritation of the tissue in the throat can also trigger coughing so it can be self-perpetuating.

Codeine works
