TMI! Gynae appointment tomorrow but TOTM

Even though my appointment letter was stating me in the face on my fridge, I stupidly have only just looked at it properly and realised I have my long awaited gynaecologist appointment tomorrow.
However.. I'm on my period. Google tells me this is fine but I'm just concerned that it won't give clear results?
My appointment is regarding my crazy cycles and heavy heavy bleeding.
Should I cancel or go ahead? Does anyone have any experience of this?

Just go and explain and they may want to look anyway or they may rebook. They will have seen everything before so just go!

Long awaited - I would go and explain. They might not examine you but you'll be on the books and might be offered an assessment at a better time for your cycle.

Let's face it, of all the times to get an awkward period the gynae department will at least be very understanding!

I had a vaginal ultrasound last year and having not had a period for 6 months (perimenopausal) it was Sod's law I started the night before the appointment. It was totally fine for that kind of appointment, so hope you should be ok.

My internal ultrasound (that i waited a long time for) happened to be when I was on a period, they still did it. I was also on a period when I had an appointment and the doctor decided they needed a feel inside, they still did it. Granted it wasn’t heavy, but all they said was they don’t care about that they just want to start treating what’s wrong with me.
Definitely go and just explain.

MitziK · 03/03/2019 20:13

Don't cancel. You'll get seen for follow up far quicker than if you cancel your new appointment.

Supersoaker10 · 03/03/2019 20:14

I tried to cancel my internal US scan as I thought I would be on my period but they said no, it's actually better if you are because they can see more of your womb. Luckily I had finished my period for the scan as it was a man doing the scan and my periods are sooooo heavy!Confused

RomanticFatigue · 03/03/2019 20:14

My gynae wouldn't examine me because of my period.

Epiphany52 · 03/03/2019 20:16

I would go. I had to go to gynie for heavy periods. Accidentally booked appointment for during said heavy period. Gynie was shocked by how heavy it was and I think I was taken a bit more seriously.
Also ask to get your iron levels checked- anemia makes periods heavier - it’s a vicious circle. I’ve had success with mefamenic acid to reduce the bleeding . But it doesn’t agree with everyone. Good Luck!

Greyhound22 · 03/03/2019 20:19

I too had an internal scan and I was bleeding quite heavily - I had already had one cancelled so I went along and explained and they did it anyway. They were really nice about it and it wasn't a problem.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 03/03/2019 20:23

Gynaecologist don't care honestly. I've been in that situation a few times. I just tell the nurse or who ever takes me into the room that I'm on my period and I need a bed pad to lie/sit on. They won't even bat an eyelid. I've had internal scans on my period, examinations and speculums.

dinosaurmommy · 03/03/2019 21:33

This is all helpful and reassuring. I won't cancel, I'll just explain. Thank you all for the advice.

@Epiphany52 my iron levels are stable now, but the bleeding was so heavy that it made me very anaemic! I bled for 4 months straight. Awful time.
