Where should I go on holiday?

Single, no children. I would like to travel somewhere in August.

I'm open to ideas.

I love reading, beautiful outdoor scenery, bright cities, gorgeous beaches, swimming, lovely hotels, walking, sunbathing etc.

I obviously don't need all of those things. I have a max of £2000 For flight, hotel, any hotel taxes and travel insurance.

If you have no children, I would avoid August, when prices are at a premium, and everywhere tends to be busier. September would be a better and cheaper time to travel, and the weather is still good then.

holidays in Italy

Bigdreams · 03/03/2019 18:41

I'm a teacher so August is best.

Somewhere safe as travelling solo.

Copenhagen? We stayed in one of the "dodgiest" areas because it was cheap and it still felt safe - incredibly flat so easy to walk around but their citycard is incredibly good value and lets you into loads of museums/art galleries etc and also covers transport. really pretty/"different" city.

I think I'd go to Sorrento, it's a beautiful lively city with breathtaking views, amazing food and plenty of places nearby to visit (Amalfi coast, Naples, Mt Vesuvius, Pompeii, Capri etc etc). It'll be hot in August but you'd have an amazing holiday.

Bigdreams · 03/03/2019 19:32

Thanks. I'll have a look. Not a place I'd thought of.

Norway might work if you don't mind 22C rather than 30C - flights to Oslo are really cheap with Ryanair - about £60 return plus luggage or for a bit more can fly into Bergen. You have the fjords on the West coast. You can do by train on say Norway in a Nutshell route or hire a car. WE are doing Sweden and Norway this August - into Stockholm, seeing moose and beavers in Sweden then off to just south of Oslo to place with private beach then on towards Bergen / Voss area and back from Oslo. Lots of walking in that area and white water rafting, canyoning, Flam Railway, fjords etc, canoeing, glaciers.

Think its doable on that budget - ours is about £6k for 2 weeks for 4 of us including £100 a day for food and £100 a day for activities, £1000 for a car, petrol, parking etc. We used Novosol for some of the accommodation and Booking.com. Some hotels, some apartments.

Cruise to the midnight sun. Or Iceland.

Penguinandbear · 03/03/2019 19:45

Italy is lovely generally - Venice, Rome, around south, Sicily etc all attractive and fairly safe.

clippityclop · 03/03/2019 19:46

I'd head to the Italian lakes where you can loll about in the sun, visit cities, gardens, concerts, hill walk, do watersports or whatever takes your fancy. Have a great time.

I have a week at end of June, I am also looking at a solo holiday. I was thinking of going to Seville in Spain

I'm also a teacher and single... my usual places to holiday are Rome, Venice.... generally italy feels very safe. This year I am thinking of Sirrento.

Penguinandbear · 03/03/2019 20:07

Austria might work too - we've been to Hintertux and you can ski there all year and ice palace at top of mountain. Its hot on the ground so could sunbathe. Cheap flights to Innsbruck. Very safe. Plenty of swimming / water activities. Not sure about beaches.

SuziQ10 · 03/03/2019 20:15

I would not go anywhere in Europe in August if I didn't have to due to DC. Everything is overpriced and busy.

I'd see if I could find cheap flights to Thailand (low season - it rains for half an hour each afternoon). I once went in Aug with a similar budget, flights were about £700 rtn, accommodation was roughly £50 a night, less in some places. And spending money, but food and things are cheap out there.

AmperoBlue · 03/03/2019 20:21

Fly to Nice. The train goes all the way along the coast up to Italy and down to Cannes or St Tropez. Villefranche is stunningly pretty, lots of bars and small restaurants and has a beach. Easy to get to get chatting to people as lots are passing through on their boats. Easy to get around on said train to visit Monaco or a Nice or Antibes.

wowfudge · 03/03/2019 20:26

If you can bear the heat, Greece is lovely and the people welcoming and friendly. I've holidayed there alone and it felt totally safe. I've met other women on holiday there and even stayed in touch with some of them.

Penguinandbear · 03/03/2019 20:28

In some countries school holidays finish mid August in Europe so if you go last 2 weeks it can be cheaper and quieter.

butterflywings37 · 03/03/2019 20:57

Definitely Thailand - so much to do and beautiful scenery

RomaineCalm · 03/03/2019 21:19

I would cruise. Guided tours to some amazing places, time to relax, read and sunbathe, lots of eating options and the option to spend time with others or be on your own.

theliverpoolone · 03/03/2019 21:46

Sri Lanka is lovely.

Meretricious · 03/03/2019 21:50

Mallorca. Palma is lovely, great restaurants and easy trips out.

Or I’d fly to Malaga and train to Seville, Granada etc....

MrsTerryPratcett · 03/03/2019 21:52

Adventurous or not?

NorthernBullet · 03/03/2019 21:53

NYC? Amazing at all times of the year and something for everyone (apparently, I go later this year for the first time)

Bigdreams · 04/03/2019 19:23

MrsTerryPrachet I'm open to adventurous suggestions!

I'm leaning towards Sorrento at the moment or an Italy adventure.
