Can you really get knitwear shortened?

I'm so fed up of constantly trying to find good quality knitwear in a petite length. A few months ago I went to a personal shopper who couldn't find me one single thing that fitted, but she did suggest I could get stuff from Hobbs and have it shortened. Can you really do this with knitwear? If you needed to remove about 3-4 inches, wouldn't the knit start unravelling? And even if it could be done, it sounds like a specialist thing so presumably it would be really expensive?

Just to add: please don't start suggesting shops to go to as I've been there a million times and it never works. I would just like to know if shortening knitwear is really a thing.

I'd think a decent knitter could unravel the last few inches and then cast it off there to stop it unraveling
I've never tried it on shop bought knitwear though.

Yeah I'm talking about fine-knit stuff.
