Can anyone tell me how it happened? What's the back story?

You need to watch from the beginning. The first series are the best.

I agree, it dips a bit around season 4 and then picks up again, then dips again. Not really selling it am I? I do love it though

Series 1-4 are brilliant. The show now is not what it was then. Series 5-7 were ok but starting to wane (still the odd rare brilliant moment). The 8th series and now the 9th are so dull. They strayed too far from the comic. I used to count down the days between seasons and mid season breaks. This time I didn't even notice it had returned until 2 episodes were on my planner. I've just started House of Cards. It is sublime.

Oh you have to watch it from season 1! I've got to season 5 and agree with the above pp... loved the first seasons and it does dip a bit. I've loved the characters so def watching from the beginning
