Help! Can anyone give me a layperson explanation of how to answer number 1 on this sheet so I can help my daughter with the rest? Google isn't being my friend!

(My GCSE's were many many moons ago!)

They are both rectangles so must be the same number.
Answer is 10
1/2 of 10 is 5
2/5 of 10 is 4
5-4=1

The number in the shape has to be a number both the bottom of the fractions go in to. So that gives you somewhere to start....

Thanks :) how did you know the answer is 10? Did you just guess a number and work from there or is there a way of determining it must be 10 before proving it?

I think you need to multiply the fractions to get a common denominator first (as Back says) then work it out from there.

What is the lowest common denominator for 2 and 5 - 10!

For number 2 a number that 2 and 3 go in to so you could start with 6 then try 12 etc
