The value range of big supermarkets - it's Italian Style Hard Cheese or similar.

I got some from sainsburys last week, but i think other places have it too.

I'm curious - what makes parmesan not vegetarian?

Animal rennet

What's animal rennet?

Daisydoesnt · 03/03/2019 11:59

You won't find a vegetarian Parmesan OP - its has protected designation of origin status and all Parmesan is made using rennet.

You need to look instead for a vegetarian hard or Italian Style hard cheese.

daisy will it still taste like Parmesan?

well it depends what you manage to find! But it won't and can't be an exact Parmesan.

I bought some from Tesco at Christmas, ready grated. I'm fairly sure it was labelled as vegetarian Parmesan, rather than hard cheese.

Waitrose sell it. It's about £2.50 for a wedge, but obviously isn't actual Parmesan. It's called Italian hard cheese or something.

I really miss eating Parmesan... The Sainsburys one doesn't taste the same.
