An afternoon out around oxford

We have to travel to Oxford today to see someone for an hour this morning. It's about an hour and a half away from us, so we are hoping to spend a bit of time in the city.

We have two boys in tow, 4 and 1. The 1 year old hates his buggy so walking round the city all day isn't an option, even though I would love to look at the colleges.

We have done the natural history museum before which was lovely, but wonder if there is anything else we can do that's similar?

Weather isn't looking good unfortunately.

If you want a museum - Pitt Rivers Museum is great.
Out of the city, Sprouts Play Barn at Millets Farm is popular.
If the weather was better, I would suggest Blenheim (although pricey).

The shrunken heads in the Pitt Rivers? The Egyptian galleries in the Ashmolean? I think part of the Story Museum is still open, although the exhibition space is being renovated.

Honestly, when DS was four, his favourite thing was the Blackwells children’s books department, running around the outside of the Rad Cam, and going into the Covered Market for a Ben’s Cookie. (He also liked punting playing croquet in my old college, but as it’s hideously expensive to pay for, I’d leave that.)

If you want to see the city but without the walking, get on a Hop On/Off tour bus. www.citysightseeingoxford.com
If your 4yo likes trains, he’ll love Pendon pendonmuseum.com/pendon-for-families-1.php
Millets Farm is also good fun for small children. There’s an indoor play barn milletsfarmcentre.com/what-s-here/for-families.html
