Memory foam mattress - any good?

After realising our current mattress is about 12 years old, we have decided to get a new one. I like the idea of a memory foam one. Does anyone have one? Any good? Any recommendations?

We have a normal mattress with memory foam topper and it's the best money I've ever spent. It's sooo comfortable.

It is quite soft though. We had a memory foam mattress before and it was too hard for me. I'd go and try some out and see gets suits you.

Cwtches123 · 02/03/2019 14:59

We have the Dormea memory plus. It was a which best buy recommendation and we paid less than £300 about 6 months ago. It came with a free trial but we fell in love with it. Had a memory foam topper before but it was really hot, this mattress isn't.

SmallestInTheClass · 02/03/2019 15:04

See if you can do a free trial. We had one for the first time, it was very comfy but very sweaty so it had to go back!

So comfy but also really sweaty. I love sinking into it but DH hates it

Soontobe60 · 02/03/2019 15:06

I have a Leesa. I love it. Not at all sweaty. You have to get used to the lack of bounce though 😂

Nanna50 · 02/03/2019 15:25

I had one, it was cold when you got into bed, then too hot too sleep on once you warmed up. Agree with the lack of bounce back, I got rid of it. A trial sounds like good idea.

Boyskeepswinging · 02/03/2019 15:28

Definitely trial before buying if you can, noting that it is currently early March. Some are very sweaty and unpleasant and I can't imagine what hell they would have been during that heatwave last year.

MiniMum97 · 02/03/2019 15:40

They are hot sweaty and doused in toxic FRs

I used to have memory foam but have switched to a Cottonsafe mattress. Completely natural, way more comfortable than memory foam, cool and completely free of toxic FRs. Naturally flame retardant.

Jupiter13 · 02/03/2019 15:43

My memory is playing up...😂

ShintyStickHitsShins · 02/03/2019 15:48

We've got a Sealy with pocket springs underneath, and geltex on top rather than memory foam. More comfortable and way less hot.

Thindragon · 02/03/2019 18:54

I'm not being paid... honest! but we got a mumsnet mattress!! superb for perimenopause and children jumping in and out and expensive but so worth it

Try and get one from somewhere that'll do a 'return in 100 days' or something. We spent £700 on one that felt just lovely in the shop and touted all the airflow and temperature moderation and whatnot, but turned out to suit neither of us in bed - too heat-reflective so both too hot and not warm enough depending on your own skin temperature, too deeply squidgy but not good enough at accepting shoulders. Was awful for sex too, it had some sort of strange movement absorbence and sweaty.

Gave it away (no stains!) and got ourselves a more classic type one, lovely.

We both like firm mattresses though, and switch from side to back sleeping. Your own preferences may work perfectly with a memory foam one.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 02/03/2019 21:24

My memory foam mattress was one of my most costly mistakes, dh convinced me to get one and after a lot of research and trying them out in the shops we bought one.

It was bloody horrible from day one, it was hot, difficult to turn over on and gave me awful hip pain, in hindsight why did I ever want my mattress to remember me? I want it to support me and spring back into a mattress shape when I turn over, not mould to my body then take ages to re-mould if I turn over.

I lasted about a year with it because it cost so much and we didn't have money to burn replacing it but in the end it went to the tip and I've slept comfortably since on my lovely sprung mattress.

Itstartedinbarcelona · 02/03/2019 21:41

We love ours. It makes sleeping anywhere else really difficult though.

SandlakeRd · 02/03/2019 21:47

We had a pocket sprung with memory foam top and ended up turning it the “wrong” way round!
It gave me back pain and was so difficult to move around. When DH broke his collarbone he couldn’t get out of bed!

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 02/03/2019 22:07

I tried a memory foam one in Ikea, it was horrible, like quicksand. Their normal foam Morgedal is a Which Best Buy though.

BrokenWing · 02/03/2019 22:43

Ours was a mattress with a 10cm memory foam layer. Too hot and takes a lot of effort to turn round on. We got rid after 3 sleepless weeks.

roses2 · 02/03/2019 22:45

We hae one. It's very warm which I love. If you don't like being hot in the night it might not be for you. I have this one (it's slightly cheaper on eBay):

Paddingtonthebear · 02/03/2019 22:46

We had a memory foam, loved it at first but then hated it, too hot and sweaty and it really started to dip. Wouldn’t get another

CoperCabana · 02/03/2019 22:48

We got a cool one. It is v comfy. Not great for shagging though! 😂

LittleCandle · 02/03/2019 22:52

I have one. I really like it because it is very firm. Also it reflects heat back at me, and since I struggle with being cold, that is great. Alas, the night hot flushes started and in those few minutes, I am dying of heat. I often now get up to the loo so the bed (and me!) cool down. The rest of the time, I love it.

FriendOrFaux · 02/03/2019 22:59

DM bought an Emma memory foam mattress, she loves it. I've only sat on it and the lack of bounce feels strange to me.
We have a Hypnos bedstead mattress with a memory foam topper. Blissfully comfy.

Nishitasawant · 10/04/2019 06:47

If you want to have a memory foam mattress, check websites to get a wide variety and guaranteed discounts. THE One is offering a discounted price for memory foams through its spring sale. You can get a 180X200 or 120X200 mattress at a discounted price on The One.
