Big babies!

Just been for a growth scan at 30 weeks and according to the ultrasound technician, baby is already measuring way off the 95th centile.

His current estimated weight is over 4lbs. I also have gestational diabetes.

Has anyone had experiences similar/the same and when did you give birth?

My DD was 11lb 5.5oz (!!!) when I had her 8 years ago, by EMCS. I did have undiagnosed gestational diabetes though. In contrast, DS weighed 6lb9oz last June, and my GD was monitored and controlled then through diet. I’m guessing you are under consultant care and have medication or dietary advice etc?

My DD was 2 weeks late, and in contrast, my DS was born by ELCS at 37 weeks - there couldn’t have been a bigger difference in the births! I was induced with DD too, and went through 9 hours of labour with her before my EMCS. God knows how anyone missed her (and my) ginormous size..!

@NooNooHead1981 I'm diet controlled for now and that seems to be working well, all levels under target.

I don't know if that will change though, especially with DS apparently being so big already!

I was told DD was measuring big and would be a huge baby... she was 5lb 9oz!! She was (and still is) all limby.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/03/2019 17:02

My last baby was 9 13. Over 2lbs larger than my next largest baby. Not massive but pretty big. Ended up with an emergency C-section but it wasn't his size just a very solid head and a funny angle.

Over 4lbs at 30 weeks seems a little extreme to me, I'm hoping they are wrong otherwise I can't see myself not being induced..

DS2 was 9lb 12 - no gestational diabetes, and they didn't have any indication he was big before he arrived. Vaginal birth, but he came quite quickly in the end, so a bit of tearing (all patched up fine, though!)

All I was going to say is that if you have a big baby, look after your back and your knees when your baby is a newborn. All that picking them up from a lying position will take it's toll on you - much more so than lifting a baby/toddler that can stand or sit. So just take care. (I thought I was being very good looking after my back by always lifting from the knees...but that then knackered my knees!)

All the best!

My dds were 9lb7 and 10lb10!!!! I had undiagnosed, so uncontrolled, gestational diabetes with dd2.

Nobody guessed that dd2 would be quite so huge, although we were expecting her to be about the same as dd1.

I had vaginal births with both of them, only gas and air, no tears. So it's not inevitable to have a problem birth of you've got a big baby, some big babies come out relatively easily.

I quite liked my babies being big. They didn't seem so delicate and fragile as smaller babies. Both of my dds could support their own heads pretty much straight away (like when holding them up on your shoulder, mine were lifting their heads and looking around from day 1, although obviously not for long periods).

2 boys here.
My eldest was born the day before edd, 8lb 8oz. He's 21 in September.
The youngest, 18 In September,
Well the hospital lost my bloods so had further blood tests, and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and was put on insulin, he arrived a week later, nearly 5 weeks early weighing 8lb 15oz.

OpiesOldLady · 03/03/2019 11:36

At 37 weeks I was measuring 45 weeks with DD2. I had controlled GD and when she was born by emcs at 38w she was all of 8lb 6!

Previously had undiagnosed GD with DD1 and she was 10lb2oz, and diagnosed GD which was uncontrolled with DS3 who was 9lb15.5oz.

TSSDNCOP · 03/03/2019 13:19

10lb, 5oz. The Registrar that initially kicked up at inducing me was adamant he'd be 7lb, and actually demanded a re-weigh HmmInduced on due date. Epi but vaginal birth with lots of assurance at the end. Apparently big babies can go back up as well as down, according to the midwife, but I always think she must've been on the gas and air too Grin
