Depo injection - contraception

Hi ladies, posting here for traffic.

Anyone on the depo? What was it like for you?

I ask because I’ve gone from the mini pill with very irregular bleeding lasting 2 weeks to spotting here and there. I got the depo on the 18th of December, due mynext shot on the 12th but have brought it forward to the 7th of March. Everything was fine and it seemed like my second period on it only lasted 3 days. Fast forward to this period and I have now been on for 15 days with no sign of it stopping 🙄. The nurse did mention it could take 4 shots to see how I would react on it but is this normal? I was like this on the mini pill but thought this would be the better option. I don’t want to not have the next one but worried this bleeding is going to carry on. It’s not light either. The only thing it’s stopped is my period pain. Any advice would be welcome.

Depo made me bleed too. I gave up after the second one. It also made me put on a ton of weight

DoneLikeAKipper · 28/02/2019 12:51

I was fine until month 6 (so end of the second shot), then I had two bleeds in a month. The second went on for ages as well. I decided to have my third shot and no bleeding again so far. I never had an issue with the pill, but terrible with timing taking it everyday.

I had trouble with depo too , heavy bleeding , painful breasts , mood swings also. Those symptoms got worse as I waited for it to leave my system , I felt ill for about four months after my last injection.

Tbh it pisses me off how it gets suggested by a nurse/go a every mini pill check up I have. You are also not properly warned of it's side effects when you have your first jab.

I've been on it for 10+ years. I love it. Have had no bleeding whatsoever. On the other hand, I have had friends who have had constant bleeding since they went on it. Sorry, not very helpful Blush

I didn't think it was supposed to be used for more than 2 years at a time due to effects on bone density. Do you get bone scans?

If you want future children then be aware it can delay return to fertility for up to a year (sometimes longer)

I've been on it for nearly 14 years. I have bone scans periodically and they show no sign of any change.

OP the depo seems to be so variable in how it affects people. In my case I haven't had a period since I went on it nearly 14 years ago. But I also had very regular predictable periods on the mini-pill, so it might just be related to how different bodies deal with hormones?

DarkestBeforeDawn · 28/02/2019 14:10

Constant bleeding here too from the depo. In fact, all hormonal contraception now means pretty much a permanent light period. I no longer use hormonal contraception, it just doesn't agree with my body and I feel so so much more myself (emotionally) without it. Hope you find something to suit you!

SamanthaH92 · 01/03/2019 07:25

Thanks lady’s. Wouldn’t be bad if it was light but it’s fairly heavy. Was hoping it would of stopped by now. I wonder if hormonal contraception just isn’t going to work now for me after having babies?

Which mini pill was it? I had fortnightly periods with 2 types and then cerazette stopped them completely. The mirena coil also stopped them. The depo made me bleed

SamanthaH92 · 01/03/2019 21:41

@dementedpixie I was on desomono (think that is how Its spelt). Still bleeding today fairly heavy. Tried to speak to the nurse at my gps but was just given an early appointment in the 7th. Apparently you can no longer speak to them over the phone 🙄. Before my 7 month old my periods where 3 to 4 days long. Not to heavy but bad period pain. I was put on the pill at 2-3 weeks postpartum. Don’t think I can cope being on like this.

Desomono is the same as cerazette which is the one that stopped my periods.

Could you take the combined pill or do you have a risk factor for that?

SamanthaH92 · 02/03/2019 06:25

They were going to give me the combined pill but at the time my bmi was slightly over and high blood pressure runs in the family. So that’s out the question really. I was fine on the mini pill till having my first DD but no where near as bad as this time after my second

I'm searching for my next type of contraception and thinking about the injection too, but heard it takes a long time to leave the system. Just found a website that has reviews on contraception - looks quite interesting and has got reviews for every type of pill etc. theldown.com/
